World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) : Research Technician

The Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Institute of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT-TSBF), is seeking to fill the position of Research Technician to be based at the CIAT-TSBF office in Maseno, Western Kenya. Supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), CIAT-TSBF is a non-profit organization that
conducts socially and environmentally progressive research aimed at reducing hunger and poverty and preserving natural resources in developing countries. The Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Institute of CIAT-TSBF operates as an integral part of the CIAT-TSBF research program and is hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya. The goal of CIAT-TSBF is to contribute to human welfare and environmental conservation in the tropics by developing adoptable and suitable soil management practices that integrate the biological, chemical and socioeconomic processes that regulate soil fertility and optimize the use of organic and inorganic resources.

The Position:
ICRAF/CIAT-TSBF seeks to recruit a Research Technician to be based in Maseno, Kenya working on CIAT-TSBF’s on “Putting Nitrogen Fixation to Work for Smallholder Farmers in Africa “N2FixAfrica” which is a collaborative project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but will also contribute to other institute-wide projects. He/she will work closely with scientists of CIAT-TSBF involved in the project and collaborating research institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Installing, monitoring, and harvesting the demonstration and adaptation field trials across Western Kenya under supervision of the Legume Agronomist;
• Collecting field data from above trials and compiling data spreadsheets;
• Running statistical analysis on collected data in order to deliver high-quality results and prepare draft reports;
• Participate in the baseline studies;
• Organise farmer extension events in cooperation with the farm liaison specialist;
• Participate in training of farmers and staff of local organizations;
• Managing soil and plant sample processing and storage;
• Assisting students (PhD and MSc) for experimental work.

Requirements:
• BSc in agronomy or applied agricultural sciences;
• Good knowledge of legumes and inoculation;
• At least 5 years experience with field trials, including farmer-researcher interactions;
• Must be able to work independently with little supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties;
• Good working knowledge of micro-soft office and statistical packages;
• Good communicator in English;
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
