NORSKOG, the Norwegian Forestry Association, are seeking to recruit a Plantation Forestry Specialist to join their Advisory Team in the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme (SPGS) in Uganda.
Background:
SPGS supports private tree growers in Uganda by providing financial support and technical expertise. Since 2004, SPGS has been the driving force in East Africa in promoting the establishment of a high quality, timber plantation resource.
The SPGS has recently received additional funding (from the European Union & Norwegian Government) for an expanded Phase II and with over 30,000 ha already lined up over the next few years, quickly needs to expand its professional team to meet the demand for its services.
SPGS is thus seeking the services of a practical and enthusiastic forester to join their small, but dedicated team.
Qualifications & Experience:
The candidate must have a Degree or a Diploma in Forestry and a minimum of 8 years hands-on experience of establishing and managing large scale commercial plantations -pine and eucalypts in particular.

- Sound silvicultural knowledge of establishing & managing fast growing tree crops in the tropics and/or sub-tropics;
- Training skills: a proven ability to pass on knowledge to others;
- Plantation forestry research experience;
- Experience with managing private contractors;
- Tree nursery management;
- Report writing and presentation skills (in English);
- A valid driver's licence (preferably with 4x4 experience).
- Other desirable skills include: working with small growers; certification (FSC); harvesting and marketing; GIS/GPS mapping and competence with computers.
A 2-year contract will be offered to the selected candidate, starting early in 2010. The post is based in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, but the work will require substantial travel up-country (which is well-facilitated).
