d. Draft, type routine and non-routine correspondence including transcribing from dictation – letters, memos, faxes, documents and reports;

e. Attend to telephone calls and visitors, drawing the attention of the supervisor to urgent matters and responding to queries with discretion;


f. Make appointments and arrange for meetings on behalf of the supervisor and receive visitors;

g. Keep equipment in use and good condition and report on defects to the Supervisor;

h. Perform other duties as assigned.


3.  Education Qualifications

- Minimum of “O” level or equivalent

- Diploma in Secretarial Science and Office Management from a recognized institution.

- A higher qualification will be an added advantage.

- Good knowledge and practical use of computer are mandatory.

A minimum of five (5) years relevant work secretarial experience, preferably in an international organization.

- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to organize and work under pressure in a multi-cultural environment;

- Good communication and planning skills;

6.  Language Requirement

An excellent command of Portuguese language. Knowledge of any of the other three AU working languages (English, French and Arabic) will be an added advantage.

2.  Job Purpose

Be responsible for the Interpretation at sessions and meetings of the Court as well as for translation of the documents of the Court from English into Portuguese.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Registrar, the Interpreter/Translator (Portuguese) will perform the following duties:

a. provide proper, clear, faithful interpretation from English into Portuguese during sessions and meetings of the Court using the standard, clear and accurate language;

b. translate properly documents, primarily from English language into Portuguese, ensuring the highest standard of accuracy, and maintaining the spirit, context, quality, technical language and nuances of the original version, using precise, clear and proper terminology;


To do this work, the Interpreter/Translator (Portuguese) shall:

- check appropriate references to ensure exact understanding and use of AU technical terminologies;
- consult colleagues, authors of texts, and specialized technical dictionaries/ glossaries, data banks …;

- keep abreast with developments in the language field, both in the source and target languages, by compiling and regularly up-dating specific terminologies, phrases, lexicons, acronyms and special expressions in order to widen the stock of vocabulary with the aim of enhancing skills and ability;

- Help develop terminology/lexicons of the AU;
- provide consecutive interpretation, when required, during audiences and of statements at conferences, meetings, discussions, etc;

- perform any other duty as may be assigned.


4. Education Qualifications

Candidates must have a minimum of a University degree in Languages, Humanities or related discipline and a professional qualification from a recognized interpreters/translators school.


4.  Work Experience

Candidates must have a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively relevant experience in interpretation and translation. Experience in working with legal documents is highly desirable.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief, Staff Development and Training Unit (SDTU), the incumbent’s major duties and responsibilities will be as follows:
  1. To conduct French language course sessions for ICTR staff members from beginners level to advanced level as per the established curriculum, including preparation of class session handouts.
  2. To conduct and invigilate quarterly end of term exams and consequently mark the examinations to give a percentage assessment rating of performance based on the established marking scheme.
  3. To assist in conducting, invigilating and marking of language placement tests for non-beginner applicants, to determine their level of proficiency in the language course applied for attendance.
  4. To assist in conducting oral examination interviews for language course participants registered to sit for the annual Language Proficiency Examinations (LPE) procured by the United Headquarters in New York (OHRM).
  5. To maintain a class attendance checklist for monitoring staff participation in the language course and for the SDTU attendance records.
  6. To assist with the preparation of the language class schedule in liaison with the Chief of SDTU and the Training Assistant.
  7. To prepare in liason with other French language instructors quarterly end of term skits/theatrical plays to be staged by the language course participants.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief, Staff Development and Training Unit (SDTU), the incumbent’s major duties and responsibilities will be as follows:
  1. To conduct Spanish language course sessions for ICTR staff members from beginners level to advanced level as per the established curriculum, including preparation of class session handouts.
  2. To conduct and invigilate quarterly end of term exams and consequently mark the examinations to give a percentage assessment rating of performance based on the established marking scheme.
  3. To assist in conducting, invigilating and marking of language placement tests for non-beginner applicants, to determine their level of proficiency in the language course applied for attendance.
  4. To assist in conducting oral examination interviews for language course participants registered to sit for the annual Language Proficiency Examinations (LPE) procured by the United Headquarters in New York (OHRM).
  5. To maintain a class attendance checklist for monitoring staff participation in the language course and for the SDTU attendance records.
  6. To assist with the preparation of the language class schedule in liaison with the Chief of SDTU and the Training Assistant.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Interpreters work for the Court Interpretation and Translation Section of the Registry and/or the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor. The successful candidates will be expected to: (a) provide consecutive interpretation on mission; (b) prepare thoroughly for the above assignments; (c) observe established terminology and in-house usage, and identify new terminology; (d) carry out basic translation duties whilst on mission, where necessary; (e) take part in refresher training sessions with a view to refining his/her interpreting skills; and (f) perform other language services as required by the heads of the two language services of the Court.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Successful candidates must: (a) possess the ability to work as part of a team; (b) demonstrate flexibility, initiative and willingness to learn new skills; (c) possess a knowledge of relevant computer software including word-processing programs; and (d) be available, at times, on short notice; and would preferably though not necessarily: (a) possess a degree in interpretation, translation, linguistics or law or in any other relevant subject matter; and (b) have relevant experience in interpretation on a formal basis, preferably in an international organisation.

KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Mother tongue proficiency in Kikuyu(1), Luhya(2), Luo,(3) Kalenjin(4) or Swahili and excellent English and/or French are required. A working knowledge of one of the other official languages of the Court is desirable. Short-listed candidates will be invited to take the ICC accreditation test which consists essentially of an interview and an interpretation test. Accreditation is, however, subject to obtaining security and medical clearance. Successful candidates will then be placed on a roster, although they should bear in mind that their deployment will depend on their suitability for a particular mission based on their personal profile and the objectives of the said mission. If suitable for deployment, Field Interpreters will then be contracted on a freelance basis for the mission.
