Telecommunications Technician job in Nairobi Kenya

Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The post is located in the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Communications Section (CS) of the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) .
Responsibilities
Under the the direct supervision of the Chief, CS the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Video/Tele-Conference Operations: a) Install, configure, test and commission conference systems; b) Assist in meeting preparations and configuring conference hardware. Provide training and support to new users of conference systems; c) Coordinate with video/tele-conference service and other relevant departments during facility failures at the sites and destinations; d) Ensure preventive maintenance schedules on video conference systems are carried out. e) Analyze new trends in video conference services and identify future resource requirements.
2. Satellite Earth Station Operations: a) Install, configure, test and commission various earth station sub-systems and associated equipment; b) Operate and maintain Intelsat Standard satellite earth-station equipment; c) Conduct period system testing and circuit line-up of existing digital carriers. Troubleshoot and fault diagnose client complaints; d) Carry out daily routine, preventive and corrective maintenance on all earth station equipment; e) Maintain updated earth-station records and documentations and prepare monthly reports on node and transmission facility performance; f) Maintain the cabling and interfacing between the satellite stations, the data center and the PABX.
3. Radio Communications Systems: a) Conduct site surveys, installation, programming and commissioning of base stations, mobile units and hand held radios; b) Repair all radios and carry out calibration; c) Carry out preventive maintenance on radio nets.
4. Office Automation System: a) Carry out installation, programming and timely repair on electrical parts of office equipment for UNON administered offices; b) Maintain a log and job card system for daily repairs of all office automation equipment; c) Liaise with procurement for fast running spares.
5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Professionalism: Knowledge of telecommunication equipment, principles of operations, including local area networks, satellites, radio and video surveillance systems, voice and messaging systems. Ability to apply knowledge and technical skills to install and test relevant equipment, provide maintenance services and user support. Analog and Digital transmission facility testing and trouble-shooting; Understanding of analog and digital transmission principles, inclusive of fiber optic systems, frame relay switching, and the theory of operation of high speed transmissions. Familiarity with commercial telecommunications services and knowledge of telecommunications enterprise communications systems. Knowledge of LAN and WAN based data protocols.

Education
Completion of secondary school education is required. Additional technical training in telecommunications or other related field is required. Certification in CCNA,CCNP,CCIPand CCVP is desirable. An associate university degree or diploma in telecommunications or related field is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in telecommunications or related field or an equivalent three years of progressive experience on CISCO and Unified Communications Systems and applications at international and national level. Extensive experience in the installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of telecommunications equipment and systems required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
