Applications for Form One Scholarships for the Year 2011

The Board of Directors of The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation hereby invites applications from suitably qualified and eligible Form One students for the year 2011 scholarships.

Applicants for the limited number of scholarships MUST meet wholly or substantially the following criteria;

Criteria

To be eligible for consideration, the applicant student must:

1. Be a Kenyan citizen
2. Have sat K.C.P.E in the year 2010 and obtained at least 350 marks. Note that preference will be given to pupils from public primary schools.
3. Be of good discipline and character as attested to by a letter from the Head teacher of the last primary school attended
4. Be an orphan or a member of a family suffering extreme poverty.
5. Have been admitted to Form I in a public secondary school.

Where Tenable

• The Scholarships are tenable in any duly registered Public Secondary School in Kenya.

Duration

The scholarship will initially benefit the successful applicant for a period of one academic year effective from the date of award. On the basis of the student’s academic performance, financial circumstances and discipline record, the Foundation’s Board will determine continued sponsorship for remaining academic period.

In aggregate, the sponsorship will last for a period of four years from the year of award or until the beneficiary ceases to be a student in a Public Secondary School whichever comes first.

Application Procedure

Interested students can apply by;

Fill and submit ‘The JKF Form one Scholarship application for the year 2011’ available on The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation website (www.jkf.co.ke) and in all District Education Offices countrywide.

The following supporting documents MUST be attached to the application form/letter;

1. A certified copy of KCPE result slip
2. A letter of recommendation from the head teacher of the Primary School last attended
3. A copy of Form one-admission letter/joining instructions.
4. Evidence of being an orphan where applicable.

Applications from students who do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be considered.

Similarly, late or incomplete applications will be disqualified. After the preliminary selection exercise, The Foundation will contact short-listed applicants for further consideration and final award.

Canvassing or giving of false in formation by or on behalf of the applicant will lead to disqualification of the application concerned.

Successful applicants and their host schools will be notified on or before 28th February 2011.

Funds

Disbursement of funds for the successful applicants will be effected on or before 20 March 2011.

Note: Applicants who will not have received any communication from the Foundation by 28th February 2011 should consider themselves unsuccessful.

Scholarship Opportunities for EAC Undergraduate Students - February 2011

East African Community (EAC) in cooperation with Arcadia University - USA is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities for undergraduate students from EAC Countries interested in African Studies especially International Law, Peace Studies and Development and other related disciplines. This program will give the students a chance to learn more about the region and the opportunity to share experiences with their counterparts from Arcadia University. The result of the exchange program is exposure to the EAC integration process, best learning practices and a widened knowledge of different cultures. The Undergraduate African Studies Program will be held at the EAC Nyerere Centre for Peace Research in Arusha, Tanzania from 3rd February to 28th May 2011.

The program includes nine
courses: Conflicts, Peace and Security in East Africa ; Public
International Law in East Africa; Women in the Emerging East Africa: Gender and Development; Health Issues in Africa; African Cultural Identities: The Role of Music in Tanzania and East Africa; African Cinema; Politics in Francophone Africa; French (Beginners); and Three different levels of Kiswahili (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Students)

Students have the choice of taking four classes out of the nine and the course structure will consist of class work, guest speakers and independent research. In addition, and in order to get the certificate, students will write a research paper related to Africa. Finally the program will include visits to various institutions in Arusha especially the international and regional organizations.

To join the program, Students must have completed at least two successful years at the university with first class or upper second grades; have good academic standing and not on disciplinary probation; and must have a good level of English as the program will be delivered in English exclusively. This program would also be perfect for those who have recently graduated in any of the relevant disciplines seeking specialized academic qualification in African Studies.
Scholarship awards will only cover program related expenses and tuition fees. Please note that recipients of this scholarship will cater for all other expenses for the duration of their stay in Arusha, namely accommodation, transportation and food, among others.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa

Anita Borg believed that technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social and personal lives. A technology rebel with a cause, in her life she fought tirelessly to ensure that technology’s impact would be a positive one. It was this vision that inspired Anita in 1997 to found the Institute for Women and Technology. Today this organization continues on her legacy and bears her name, The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (www.anitaborg.org).
Her capacity to mix technical expertise and a relentless vision inspired, motivated and moved women to embrace technology instead of avoiding or ignoring it. She has touched and changed the lives of countless women in the computing fields and beyond. She is responsible for including women in the technological revolution – not as bystanders, but as active participants and leaders. In 1987, prior to founding the Institute, Anita began an email online community called Systers which today has 3,000 members from all over the world. In 1994, Anita co-founded the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. The Grace Hopper Celebration has grown to become the largest gathering of women in computing in the world. The Anita Borg Institute is the umbrella organization for both of these ongoing programs as well as the Virtual Development Center, TechLeaders and a host of other dynamic partnerships and collaborations that embrace Anita’s ongoing vision.
During her life, Anita’s commitment to her vision and expertise in the field gained her significant recognition. In 1999 President Clinton appointed her to the Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology. In 2002, she received the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment.
Born Anita Borg Naffz on January 17th, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois, she grew up in Palatine, Illinois, Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Mukilteo, Washington. Anita found her way to a computer keyboard in her mid-20s. She received a Ph.D. in computer science from the Courant Institute at New York University in 1981. She then embarked on a brilliant research career for some of industry’s commercial giants including, Nixdorf, Digital/Compaq’s Western Research Lab and Xerox PARC.

The Scholarship

 Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.
As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.
Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a €7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship.
In June 2011, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must:

• Be a female student enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent) in 2011/2012.
• Be enrolled at a University in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply.
• Be studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field.
• Maintain an excellent academic record (e.g. a First Class Honours degree).

How to apply

You will be required to submit the following:

·         Up-to-date copy of your CV

·         Answers to the following short essay questions

(suggested word count is 400-600 words per question):

• Describe a significant technical project you have worked on. If you have worked on a major independent research project (such as research for a Master’s or PhD programme), please describe that work here. Give an overview of the problem and your approaches to the key technical challenges. If this was a group effort, be sure to specify your individual role and contributions.
• Give one or two examples of your leadership abilities. Explain how you were influential and what you were trying to achieve. These need not be demonstrated through formal or traditional leadership roles. Feel free to think broadly and examine the many ways you impact members of your technical community.
• Suppose someone gave you the funding and resources for a 3- to 12-month project to investigate a technical topic of your choice. Write a short version of a proposal, including a description of the project, your planned methodology, and your expected results. Please pick something other than the project you described for the first question.

·         Transcripts

• Bachelor’s: A copy of your current academic record.
• Master’s and PhD: A copy of your previous and current academic records.

·         Enrollment confirmation for 2011/2012 or confirmation of graduation date

Undergraduate Scholarships for Kenyan Students: Each year, St Lawrence awards Scholarships to Kenyan students. St Lawrence Scholarship is a full scholarship and pays for tuition, fees, room and board, insurance, books, and miscellaneous expenses.

T

he Scholarship is typically awarded in "package" form, which includes some combination of grants, merit scholarships, and campus employment. Students applying for the Kenya Scholarship must complete a copy of the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA).

The ISFAA should be submitted at the same time as your complete application for admission.

Kenyan applicants living in Kenya who are completing the paper version of the application should submit their application and all supporting documentation to the St Lawrence University Kenya Semester Program Office.

UNESCO-Japan Research Fellowships for Developing Countries

Brief description:

With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in people building the next era 20 fellowships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

The possible date of commencing research is anytime from September 2010 until December 2011.

Field of study:

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi:

1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences);

2. Inter-cultural Dialogue;

3. Information and Communication Technologies; and

4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be

considered.

20 scholarships annually.

Target group:

The fellowships are targeted to women, candidates from least developed countries (LDCs) and Palestinian researchers.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The Fellowships financed by Japan and administered by UNESCO will consist of the following:

- A maximum amount between US$6,000 to US$10,000 will be awarded to selected candidates. The amount, to be paid in two or three installments, is intended to cover research costs only, and will not be negotiable.

  

-       No other costs will be considered and grants will be neither extended nor renewed.

Eligibility:

Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

1. Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master's degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.

2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.

3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1970 will not be considered under the Programme.

4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.

5. Priority attention will be given to women, candidates from least developed countries (LDCs) and Palestinian researchers.

6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

7. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

Australian Development Scholarships

Australian Development Scholarships are a highly valued form of development cooperation that aims to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote growth and stability. They provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia. 

Fields of study are targeted to address agreed priority human resource and development needs of recipient countries, in line with Australia's bilateral aid program.

Australian Development Scholarships equip scholars with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian higher education institutions and technical colleges.
Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their country.
