Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The post is located in the Best Practices Section, City Monitoring Branch, Monitoring and Research Division.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the Head, City Monitoring Branch and the direct supervision of the Chief, Best Practices Section, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
(1). - Identify sources of information and knowledge derived from practical experience in thematic areas of UN-Habitat;
- Assist in co-ordination of global efforts, particularly those of the partners of the Best Practices and Local Leadership Programme, in the identification, documentation, validation and dissemination of best practices;
- Promote Best Practices through networking, advocacy and identification of new partners in the area of sustainable urbanization;
- Assist in the production and dissemination of information and public consumption material and support the exchange and transfer of best practices;
(2). - Participate in the identification, documentation, dissemination and application of lessons learned from best practices, good polices and enabling legislation, in support of policy development activities of UN-Habitat and partners;
- Assist in identifying and analyzing the policy and capacity-building implications derived from best practices, good policies and enabling legislation in support of World Urban Campaign, technical cooperation projects, contributions to the monitoring of the Millennium Development Goals and UN-Habitat Medium Term Strategic and Institutional Plan (MTSIP).
(3). Analyze selected best practices for trends, emerging issues and required policy responses.
(4). Perform any other duties as may be required.
Competencies
Professionalism: Demonstrated knowledge of human settlements concepts, issues and trends, and as well as application of diverse sustainability criteria in evaluating programmes and projects. Ability to manage knowledge including databases and information networks. Ability to harness information from diverse sources and to create and manage demand for such information/knowledge.
Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments and adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.
Communication: Good oral and written communication skills. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Teamwork. Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Urban Planning or Social Sciences, Political Science, Law or related field with emphasis on development planning. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible working experience in urban policy development and/or application. Experience in the field of international cooperation, research and data analysis, and familiarity with the work and activities of the United Nations system in the area of human settlements is desirable. Experience in knowledge management, information packaging and dissemination, networking and advocacy, UN and/or developing country experience an advantage.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish highly desirable.
