A collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) whose mandate is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases desires to hire a mobilization officer. The KEMRI/CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) is rolling out a population-based, prospective cohort study nested within the ongoing Demographic Surveillance System (DSS) in Gem District, Nyanza Province. The proposed project will include home-based HIV testing and counselling (HBTC), referral for voluntary male circumcision (MC) for HIV-uninfected men, and care and treatment for HIV-infected adults and children. To effectively carry out its mandate, GAP is seeking to fill the following position under the Gem evaluation project:-
POSITION: Mobilization officer –MR 9 (Job group M)
LOCATION: KEMRI/CDC Kisumu
RPORTING TO: The Study Coordinator
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT
- Higher diploma or Bachelor’s degree in public health or Social Sciences.
- At least three year relevant work experience in health promotion and education in community.
dESIRED QUALITIES
- Must have a good understanding of the published literature on community mobilization.
- Demonstrate ability to coordinate study participants.
- Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal and organization skills.
- Ability to work well in a team, and be able to collaborate well with the Ministry of Health and other partners.
- Fluency in both English, Dholuo, and Swahili, written and spoken
- Good judgment in trouble shooting, problem solving, awareness of own limitations, strong inter-personal skills and internal motivation essential.
JOB SUMMARY:
With guidance from the Gem study coordinator and the research team, the Communications Officer will coordinate and supervise the dissemination of information to the community about Gem study and activities.
SPECIFIC TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Liaise with KEMRI/CDC project leaders to develop an in-depth understanding of the Gem study design and goals of Gem project and activities.
- Act as a resource to the community about information on Gem project and activities.
- Organize and attend appropriate bazaars and other community meetings including on the weekends as needed to represent Gem project and activities.
- Supervise, organize, coordinate, train, and support Gem project and activities.
- Attend District Development Committee meetings to update committee members on Gem project and activities.
- Monitor information flow to and from the community.
- Prepare written briefs about Gem project activities for dissemination to the community.
- Liaise regularly with media and other stakeholders on Gem projects and activities.
- Develop a systematic approach to delivering information about Gem project and activities on a regular basis to the community and provide feedback to the relevant project heads.
- Communicate accurate information about Gem project and activities to community leaders and members.
- Address community concerns and queries.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the project coordinator.
Terms of Employment: A six (6) one year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. There will be a probation period for the first 3 months.
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
