Program description: This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. To effectively carry out its mandate, the Program is seeking to fill the following position in Malaria Branch in the Mal-055.

POSITION: Laboratory Technologist III (1 Position) MR 7

Location: Kisumu and Siaya

Essential Requirement

      Education: Must have Ordinary Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology /Applied biology or its equivalent from a recognized institution and be registered with the Kenya Laboratory Technicians and Technologist Board.

Experience: At least 2 years working experience in a busy research Laboratory. Previous experience in hematology and malaria blood smear coordination will be an added advantage.

Desired qualities

  • Broad knowledge of common research assays.
  • Good knowledge of GCLP.
  • Excellent malaria blood smears coordination skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Swahili.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills.

Position description:

The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating the collection, processing, analyzing, storage and tracking of study specimens. S/he will work closely with the laboratory staff, field workers and clinicians and report directly to the Laboratory supervisor.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • To coordinate malaria blood smear readings in a clinical laboratory.
  • Develop study-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the laboratory assays.
  • To ensure that adequate quality control/assurance measures with respect to samples, reagents and equipment are observed.
  • To record/enter assay results in an organized and timely manner, and write summary reports based on the work conducted.
  • To ensure that adequate stocks of reagents and other consumables are available in assigned sections and make requests for new supplies when necessary.
  • To organize sample storage and maintain clear records of the same.
  • To comply with all policies and regulations related to safety, cleanliness and infection control in the laboratory.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Laboratory Director, Laboratory supervisor or Principal Investigator.




Terms of Employment: Terms of Employment: Six (6) one year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
