Program description:

KEMRI/CDC Program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. Due to its continued growth, the program has a vacancy in the TB research vaccine (TB-R-Vac) Project.

POSITION: Study Medical Officer - MR 10 (Job Group N)

Location: Live and work within Siaya District Hospital.

Reports to: Site Study Coordinator.

Languages: Fluency in English and Kiswahili (Written and oral).

Essential Qualifications;

    Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery from a recognized university.

    Be Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board

Desirable Qualities:

    • Ability to prioritize workload of self and program team members and balance conflicting demands.
    • Experience managing patients with TB and malnutrition
    • Computer literacy in Microsoft office suite, Proficiency in Excel, Access or other database application, and internet research
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative and resourcefulness.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to lead and work within a team environment and in a diverse cultural environment.
    • Work in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity.

Position Summary:

Incumbent will have oversight of the medical, clinical and nursing teams in the execution of the medical requirements of the TB-R-VAC protocols.

Responsibilities:

    • Supervise clinical study personnel at Siaya District Hospital and other study health facilities.
    • Monitoring and providing general medical care to paediatric patients.
    • Develop an in-depth understanding of the study designs and goals, and ensure that study is conducted in compliance with study protocols and other regulatory requirements
    • Conduct CMEs at the hospital and lead discussions with the clinical and nursing personnel
    • Oversee the Implementation of the Medical component of the TB Vaccine Trial (AERAS-402) in Siaya
    • Oversee administration of study vaccine to the research participants.
    • Triage and manage paediatric emergencies
    • Reading and interpretation of chest radiographs taken at the field site.
    • Be flexible to work within the existing structures, rules of the clinics and hospital and be able to collaborate well with the Ministry of Health and other partners.
    • Perform any other duties as assigned by the trial study coordinator.

Terms of Employment: A six (6) one year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
