The Academy for Educational Development (AED), an international not-for-profit organization, working in education and training, health and nutrition, democracy and governance, and economic development seeks to recruit for the position of HIP Water and Sanitation / HIV Coordinator for its Hygiene Improvement Project to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Duration: This position will commence from 4/1/2010 to 30/7/2010 with a possible extension.
Project Summary: Ensuring access to safe drinking water and proper WASH practices benefits the entire HIV infected household by keeping them stronger, better nourished, and able to contribute to the household.
PEPFAR/Kenya recognizes the importance of safe water and hygiene promotion among PLHIV as a way to reduce diarrhea among PLHIV children and adults.
USAID/Kenya provided the Academy for Educational Development - Hygiene Improvement Project (HIP) with funds to integrate water into HIV programming.
HIP will build on the existing safe drinking water project and focus specifically on identifying behavior change approaches across the range of water, sanitation and hygiene practices to assist persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to prevent diarrheal disease.

- Improve the policy environment to ensure WASH is included in relevant policies and guidelines.
- Conduct limited formative research.
- Design a comprehensive WASH Toolkit.
- Begin to build expanded capacity for WASH integration among HIV and MCH programs.

The coordinator is expected to have a strong experience in working with PVOs/NGOs and in project management.
Essential Job Functions:
The AED/HIP Water Hygiene and Sanitation/HIV Coordinator will facilitate/lead the efforts to integrate improved WASH into PEPFAR home-based care programs in Kenya.

The coordinator is expected to have a strong experience in working with PVOs/NGOs and in project management.
Essential Job Functions:
- Coordinate and lead efforts to identify WASH/HIV partners and resources at National and Regional levels.
- Collaborate with/explore interest of partners at National and Regional levels to form the community of practice at both levels.
- Identify formative research resources and manage/coordinate formative research in two identified regions.
- Maintain communication with Government ministries/NACP to keep them informed and involved in the efforts to integrate WASH into home-based care programs in Kenya.
- Ensure effective communication with and among the stakeholder organizations at Regional and National levels to maintain an active and engaged partnership. This includes organizing and facilitating regular meetings, keeping frequent contact with these organizations.
- Facilitate capacity building to share knowledge and lessons.
- Ensure appropriate representation at key National WASH and HIV events and meetings, participate in discussions, prepare and deliver presentations, etc.
- Monitor and support the progress of integration of WASH into HIV in Kenya.
Education and knowledge requirements
- Masters in one of the following or related fields: Public Health, HIV, Water/Sanitation or other job-related field or equivalent combination of education.
- 7 years of relevant experience required. Experience in health project management in Kenya especially knowledge and experience with public health and hygiene program issues, demonstrated knowledge and track record in project management; familiarity and experience working with National AIDS Control Program, PVOs and NGOs.
