Program description: This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. The program has vacancies in the HIV Research Division of the Centers for Disease Control in Kisumu.

POSITION: Senior Lab Technologist (HIV-R Lab Supervisor) (MR10)Job Group N

LOCATION: Kisumu

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
* Must be registered by the Kenya Medical laboratory technologist and technician board
* Must have worked as a lab technologist 1 for at least three years with proven leadership ability in the same position.
* Excellent communication skills, ability to work well in a team and to collaborate with fellow staff.

LANGUAGE: Fluency in English and Kiswahili (written and oral)

EXPERIENCE:

* At least three years experience in HIV/AIDS related activities
* Experience in supervising extensive Laboratory activities in busy HIV/AID programs
* Knowledge in procurement of lab supplies, budgeting and management
* HIV serology as well as HIV, PCR, HIV1 RNA measurements, CD4+ counts, basic hematology and clinical chemistry, BED assay and HIV Genotyping and Resistance testing.

* Internal Quality Audit and Laboratory Management
* Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
* Excellent social, communication and listening skills, open-minded personality.

ESPONSIBILITIES:

The Laboratory Supervisor will report to the Laboratory Director.

* To supervise and perform all aspects of laboratory work, necessary to support the study. This includes all aspects of HIV serology as well as HIV, PCR, HIV1 RNA measurements, CD4+ counts, basic hematology and clinical chemistry, BED assay and HIV Genotyping and Resistance testing.
* To contribute actively to the development of new laboratory capabilities, and when needed develop and review Standard Operation Procedures for use in the laboratory
* To supervise laboratory technicians and technologists and ensure that proper operational procedures and laboratory safety precautions are maintained and that CDC’s bio-safety standards are adhered to
* To ensure that adequate quality assurance measures with respect to reagents, equipment and samples are observed
* To supervise the entry and recording of test results obtained and make sure it’s carried out in an organized and timely manner and to write summary reports based on the work conducted
* To maintain good administrative routines and supervise the logistic aspects of the laboratory’s work, make sure that adequate stocks of reagents and other consumables are available and order new supplies when necessary
* To control the quality of work and conduct or arrange quality assurance/quality controls of all laboratory activities
* To organize sample storage and shipment and maintain clear records of these
* To carry out all other duties assigned by the laboratory Director

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
