HIV-R Lab supervisor and Lab Director

Program description: This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The KEMRI/CDC remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. Due to its continued growth, the Program has a vacancy in the HIV-R lab project.


Position: Laboratory TECHNOLOGIST iii (MR 7) (JOB group K)

Location: Kisumu

Reporting to: HIV-R Lab supervisor and Lab Director

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Diploma in Medical Laboratory technology with 3 years experience in a clinical laboratory will be considered.
* Must be registered by the Kenya medical Laboratory technologists and technicians board
* Excellent written and verbal English skills
* Basic computer skills particularly for Word-processing, spreadsheets and e-mail required.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, listening skills and ability to learn new skills.

o Good judgment in problem solving, awareness of own limitations and strong internal motivation essential
o Must be able to write reports, keep records, and learn quickly to handle situations effectively.
o Proactive, enthusiastic, well-organized, detailed, and task-oriented.
o Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GLP)
o Willing to work weekends/holidays.




DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Be able to collect and perform quantitative and qualitative analysis on blood, serum, urine, and other biological specimens from study patients.
* Be able to operate hematology, flow cytometer, chemistry analyzers and separate cells and count.
* Perform all aspects of laboratory work, necessary to support the projects clinical and epidemiological research as well as HIV-R need for quality assurance.
* Contribute actively to the development of new laboratory capabilities, and when needed develop Standard Operating Procedures for use in the laboratory.
* Enter/record test results obtained in an organized and timely manner, and write summary reports based on the work conducted.
* Supervise the logistic aspects of the laboratory’s work, make sure that adequate stocks of reagents and other consumables are available in assigned sections and make requests for new supplies when necessary.
* Organize sample storage and maintain clear records of the same.
* Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Director.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Contract for 1 year with possibility of extension until study ends, probation period for the first 3 months Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
