Lab Technologist I (Two Positions) MR9 Job Group M

Program description: This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in Malaria and HIV and other diseases. To effectively carry out its mandate, the Program is seeking to fill the following position in GAP/HIV Lab.

POSITION: Lab Technologist I (Two Positions) MR9 Job Group M

LOCATION: Kisumu

Reporting to: HIV-R Lab supervisor and Lab Director

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Must have Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory or Bachelor Science degree
* Must have Knowledge in quality assurance.

EXPERIENCE

* Must have at least two years experience in a clinical research laboratory, quality assurance in all areas and abilities to conduct HIV serology as well as HIV PCR, HIV -1 RNA measurements, CD4+ counts, STD diagnosis (CT/NG, Syphilis, HSV2, TV, BV), basic hematology and clinical chemistry



DESIRABLE QUALITIES

* Experience in HIV serology, HIV PCR, HIV-1 RNA STD (CT/NG, Syphilis, HSV2, TV, BV) diagnosis
* Conversant with HIV diagnostic testing.
* Good knowledge of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP) and safety practices
* Good knowledge of laboratory documentation, record keeping and inventory management
* Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal and organization skills.
* Ability to work well in a team, and be able to collaborate well with others.
* Fluency in both English and Swahili, written and spoken.



POSITION DESCRIPTION: Laboratory Technologist 1 assigned to HIV Lab Kisumu and supervised by the lab supervisor/lab director.
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

* To perform all aspects of laboratory work, necessary to support projects clinical and epidemiological research as well as GAP needs for quality assurance this includes all aspects of HIV serology as well as HIV PCR, HIV -1 RNA measurements, CD4+ counts, bacteriology (STD and TB diagnosis) basic hematology and clinical chemistry
* To contribute actively to the development of new laboratory capabilities and when needed develop standard operation procedures for use in the laboratory
* To enter/record test results obtained in an organized and timely manner, and write summary reports based on the work conducted.
* To ensure that adequate quality assurance measures with respect to reagents equipments and samples are observed
* To organize sample storage and maintain clear records of them
* To perform HIV genotyping by sequencing and monitoring of HIV ARV resistance in GAP Care activities

Terms of Employment: A six (6) 1 year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
