Job description
We wish to recruit two Assistant Research Officers (ARO) at Grade 4.8 to help with the acquisition, assembly and archive of geo-referenced information on spatial databases for malaria research. The posts will be available for one year in the first instance (renewable for a second year) from 01 December 2008. The roles requires a good first degree in a discipline that teaches geographic information systems (GIS) and science. These roles will provide wide ranging GIS support to this initiative; one focussed on the global level and on Kenya specific studies. The successful candidate will become part of the Malaria Atlas Project, the aims and objectives of which can be viewed at www.map.ox.ac.uk .
Essential:
East African national
First or upper second class Bachelor degree in geography, geomatics or geospatial science or a related discipline in which GIS is a strong component
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Good numerical ability
Good computing skills
Fluency in English and Kiswahili
A strong interest in epidemiology and public health
Available to start early December 2008
Desirable:
Experience of using GIS in the workplace
Science research experience
Good administrative skills
Capacity to take the initiative and work independently
Strong self-motivation
Experience with database management packages
French, Spanish or Portuguese language comprehension
