Human Rights Assistant

Post Title: Human Rights Assistant

Level: GL- 6

Duty Station: Nairobi

Duration: 6 months with possibility of extension

Closing Date: 07 November 2008


Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Chief, Human Rights Unit, the Human Rights Assistant will perform the following duties:


Responsibilities


  • Research and collect information pertaining to human rights matters from a variety of data sources, assist in the analysis of information;
  • Assist in the drafting of internal and public reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc;
  • Draft correspondence relating to human rights matters;
  • Participate in consultations with stakeholders, prepare summaries of results;
  • Keep abreast of current human rights issues, including political and legal developments in Somalia and participate in limited monitoring activities;
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of workshops and other human rights activities as appropriate; keep track of such activities;
  • Participate with Human Rights Officers in discussions with relevant authorities, opposition groups, civil society and international actors with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seek other remedial action to prevent similar violations occurring in the future;
  • Assist the Chief, Human Rights Unit in his/her efforts to develop, widen and enhance UNPOS’ network of partners and contacts in Somalia;
  • In cooperation with CITS, assist in developing and maintaining a database to track information on human rights violations;
  • Participate in missions to Somalia as appropriate;
  • Perform other duties as required by the SRSG and the Chief of Human Rights Unit.

Professionalism – Ability to conduct independent research and analysis, identify issues and recommend solutions, proven analytical skills.


Planning & Organizing – Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor one’s work plan and those under his/her supervision.


Communication – Excellent drafting ability and communications skills, both oral and written; ability to defend and explain difficult issues to staff and senior officials.


Technology Awareness – Proficiency in computer applications relevant to the field of human rights, familiarity with internet applications, proficiency in the use of MS-Office programmes, Lotus Notes and Database applications.


Teamwork – Proven interpersonal skills, ability to maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.


Qualifications:

Education - High school or equivalent diploma plus a combination or relevant certification/diploma or other academic qualifications/training in humanities. Knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law essential. Some formal human rights educations is an advantage.


Experience - 8 to 10 years of experience in human rights or a related field; experience within the UN Secretariat, UN Common System or other international organization is desirable.


Language - Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, fluency in one or more official languages is desirable.
