Laboratory Technician III (Microscopist) (1 position) MR 6 (Job Group J)

Program description: This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It involves conducting research and program support for activities related to malaria, HIV and other diseases. It is within this remit that the DSS Branch wishes to recruit one Laboratory technician in the Out Patient department (OPD).


Position: Laboratory Technician III (Microscopist) (1 position) MR 6 (Job Group J)

Location: Kisumu

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Certificate in medical laboratory technology
* Must have a minimum of 1 year working experience in a clinical or research laboratory set up
* Must have knowledge and previous experience in microscopic diagnosis of malaria
* Must be ready to live in the study area(Gem and Karemo), within reach of the assigned facility



Skills and Abilities:

* Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision
* Ability to work well in a team, and be able to collaborate well with the local Ministry of Health staff and other partners.
* Fluency in both English and Swahili.



JOB SUMMARY: The Lab Technician/microscopist will be based at designated medical laboratories in Gem and Karemo to receive, verify and analyze specimens, and promptly report test results to the study clinicians.

Duties and responsibilities:

* Assist the Lab Technologist in collecting and performing quantitative and qualitative laboratory analysis of blood, serum, urine and other biological specimens from study patients.
* Assist and participate in the collection and packaging of specimens for tests at the KEMRI/CDC laboratories.
* Keep proper and clear documents and records of tests performed as per protocol.
* Assist in the management of inventory for laboratory supplies and reagents.
* Maintain high standards in good laboratory practice (GLP), laboratory safety, and laboratory hygiene/ infection control.
* Assist in the development and implementation of SOPs.
* Maintain highest standards of ethics, confidentiality and professionalism in the conduct of laboratory duties.
* Carry out any other duty as may be assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor




Terms of Employment:

A six (6)1 year renewable Contract as per KEMRI Scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
