Lighting Africa, a Joint World Bank and IFC Program Opportunities for Distributors

Lighting Africa, a joint World Bank and IFC program, seeks to accelerate the development of markets for modern low cost off-grid lighting products in Sub-Saharan Africa where an estimated 10 to 30 percent of household incomes is spent on hazardous and low quality fuel-based lighting products.

The goal is to mobilize and provide support to the private sector to supply quality, affordable and safe lighting to the people living in areas that are not connected to the electric grid.

Affordable lighting products using solar energy have the potential to transform the lives of many Kenyans.

People living in rural and peri-urban areas stand to benefit the most from these innovative products including lanterns and torches using renewable energies.

A growing number of manufacturers of good quality and affordable off-grid lighting products have expressed interest in partnering with local distributors. Lighting Africa is seeking to link up with local distributors interested in distributing off-grid lighting products with these local and international manufacturers.

Interested distributors should meet the following criteria:
  • Have an effective country-wide distribution network in key towns and rural areas, either directly or indirectly through reputable partners
  • Have a good working relationship with key retail channels country-wide
  • Have an established sales and marketing team capable of contributing to a steady growth of the company
  • Have a good marketing and sales structure that can integrate an additional small-sized service and maintenance unit
  • Be financially sound
Interested organizations meeting the above criteria should send their company profile with an overview of the range of products and brands distributed, as well as an indication of their distribution network and delivery model.

The company profile should additionally provide a short summary of the organizations’ strengths.

Only short-listed distributors will be contacted.

Company profiles should be submitted not later than 17th November, 2009 at the following address: distributors @ lightingafrica.org
