Reducing poverty is the primary aim of the British Government Department for International Development (DFID).
DFID Kenya and Somalia is responsible for managing the British Government’s contribution to international development in Kenya and Somalia.
Jointly with the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), DFID is working with other donors and Somali authorities to develop and implement a common harmonization plan for the health sector in Somalia.
To support harmonization, a Health Sector Advisory Team (HSAT) is being established to provide technical, impartial analysis and recommendations to all international stakeholders.
Health Adviser – Somalia
A vacancy has arisen for an advisory post for an experienced health specialist based in SIDA’s and DFID’s Nairobi offices. The successful applicant will spend approximately 50% of their time working for each agency. This will be a 3 year contract with the possibility of renewal.
Appointment will be under local terms and conditions and is subject to security clearance.

Key Responsibilities
- Work with the DFID and SIDA Somalia teams in improving and delivering health interventions in Somalia.
- Work with partners to help Increase the coherence and effectiveness of the international health sector support to Somalia
- Lead and manage DFID support and advise SIDA on implementation and follow up of SIDA support to the Somalia health sector
- Strengthen the impact of DFID and SIDA health support to Somalia
You will have the following technical and behavioural competencies:
- Advanced degree in a relevant field such as development, management or public health;
- Demonstrated experience managing and leading health interventions at a senior level in an organisation or as a consultant;
- Experience working in conflict-affected and fragile states, particularly on issues of public health.
- Knowledge and experience of international development policy and approaches in fragile states; knowledge of, and previous experience working in Somalia would be an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Good analytical skills
- Exceptional influencing skills
- Ability to make effective and timely decisions
- High level of organization, planning and prioritization skills
- Possess DFID Advisors’ core competencies as articulated in the job description
- Applicants must have a legal right to work in Kenya.
