Community Mobilizer Jobs: Solidarites

Position: 11 (eleven) Community Mobilizer
Line Manager: Project Supervisors
Location: Nairobi Slums
Closing date: 15th January 2010
Duration of the contract: 12 months with possibility of extension

Solidarités is an international humanitarian aid organisation which provides assistance to populations who are victims of armed conflict or natural disaster.

For 29 years, Solidarités has concentrated its action on meeting three vital needs: water, food and shelter. By carrying out emergency programmes, Solidarités acquired experience end expertise in the fields of access to drinking water and sanitation.

The joint Kenya / Somalia mission is relatively young (started in March 2007) and includes 2 projects in South Somalia, and 1 project in Kenya at the moment.

In Kenya, Solidarités has one project in Lodwar focus on Water and Sanitation and Food Security, whether in an emergency context or a recovery context.

In Somalia, Solidarités has one project in Bardera district / Gedo and another one in Afmadow district / Lower Juba.

Solidarités is now starting the phase 3 of its Food Security project in Nairobi Informal settlements. Solidarités’ strategy to improve food security for the urban poor is to capitalize on its former experience in the informal settlement in order to:
  • Improve the capacity of the urban poor to produce themselves a part of their food, by expanding the Urban Agriculture approach (“Garden in a sack”) implemented successfully by Solidarités in the slums. Urban agriculture will be complemented by poultry production for the very most vulnerable.
  • Enable the beneficiaries to increase their income by selling part of this production (cash crops, poultry).
1/ Objective of the position:

The community mobilizer is a key person who will:
  • ensure achievment of the objectives within the timeframe of the program
  • Create awareness of the program to the communities
  • Mobilise target communities to adopt the project activities
  • Participate in monitoring of activities
  • Participate in assessing the needs in terms of Food Security in the area
2/ Hierarchy:

Under the authority of: the Project Supervisors.

3/ Keys responsibilities:

Note: this list gives the framework of your activities but it is not exhaustive. You may be asked to complete other duties.

Program realisation
  • Mobilizing target communities and creating awareness of the program activities
  • Ensuring that program activities are implemented as per the proposed project
Follow up of current program
  • Oversee the planting of seeds in seedbeds at regular levels and ensure a constant supply of seedlings throughout the program duration
  • Distribution of seedlings to beneficiaries who have already prepared a medium of planting
  • Monitoring the progress of the activities at village level
  • Training on organic farming at demonstration farms and at household levels
  • Establishing sufficient seedbeds at community level
Needs Assessment
  • Collecting accurate and precise data on beneficiaries and inputs received from Solidarités
  • Assist in conducting project assessments and data collection
  • Reporting other emerging needs in terms of food security to the project manager
  • Any other responsibilities as may be assigned by the project manager and as per the emerging needs of the program
4/ Qualifications and experience requested:

Qualification:
  • Minimum qualification is the completion of Secondary school education.
Experience:
  • Proven experience of working directly with communities in an urban setting (slums)
  • Proven experience in identification of most needy / vulnerable community members
  • Good track record and rapport with the community

  • Good understanding of the dynamics in the Nairobi slums
  • Good communicator and team builder
  • Able to plan and prioritize activities
  • Good team member, able to solve and advice community members
  • Good writing capacity
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili
  • Good computer skills will be an added advantage

  • Calm and diplomatic in handling communities

  • Able to adhere to Solidarités internal staff regulations
