FAO Kenya is seeking to recruit a National Consultant to coordinate and monitor the implementation of one of its projects on promoting water storage and irrigation for a period of 11 months. The position will be based in Nairobi.
Purpose of the position
Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Kenya and direct supervision of the FAO Kenya Project Coordinator, the consultant will provide overall leadership in the management and implementation of the small-scale irrigation objective of the FAO Kenya ‘Reducing the negative impacts of drought and soaring food prices’’ project.
The consultant will also support and build capacity of the implementing partners and farmers on water storage and management, irrigation development, drainage, flood control and water user associations’ in the selected irrigation project areas.

Key responsibilities
- Facilitate identification and preparation of investment projects and programmes and provide implementation support.
- Organize and manage an overall plan for effective implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project’s small-scale irrigation objective activities
- Promote a participatory process among the stakeholders to develop, monitor and evaluate the small-scale irrigation indicators and standards.
- Develop linkages with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Ministry of Agriculture, water users associations, National and International NGOs and other relevant departments in providing technical support and assistance to the beneficiaries.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of FAO support to capacity building activities on irrigation infrastructure and irrigated crop practices to the implementing partners, collaborators and small-scale irrigation farmers.
- Support the FAO Project Coordinator on tasks’ management, field mission organization and terms of reference development, selection of consultants/ implementation partners and supervision of their work and ensuring the quality of the outputs.
- Organize procurement and distribution of inputs required by the targeted small-scale irrigation farmers.
- Review and enhance irrigation support and development reports from partners and related project proposals.
- Responsible for timely project activity reporting.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Competences
- At least a first degree in agriculture, water engineering, hydrology or water and natural resources or a closely related field of specialization.
- A minimum 10 years of relevant experience with at least 5 in management of irrigated crop production.
- Experience in coordination and team work skills with varied stakeholders;
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to bring diverse stakeholders together over a common goal;
- Good computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets including charting data, and database management. Desk Top Publishing experience an added advantage.
- Excellent proposal and report writing skills
