United Nations Population Fund Career Opportunity: National Project Professional Personnel (NPPP)

Position Title: National Project Professional Personnel (NPPP) – Population & Development
Location: UNFPA Kenya Country Office, Nairobi
Duration: 1 year
Start Date: June 2009 - May 2010
Reporting to: Assistant Representative, Population & Development & Gender Equality

Objective:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Representative, the NPPP (Population and Development) will contribute to the effective management of the UNFPA Population and Development Programme. He/She will analyze and assess relevant political, social and economic trends and provide substantive inputs to Programme formulation and evaluation, joint programming initiatives and national development frameworks in regard to population and development.

Responsibilities:

1. In collaboration with government counterparts, NGOs and other partners, contribute to the design and implementation of the Population and Development component of the country programme by providing inputs on lessons learned, best practices, newly developed policies and by supporting programme monitoring and evaluation.

2. Analyse and interpret the political, social and economic environment with regard to population and development and prepare briefs and inputs for policy dialogue, technical assistance coordination and development frameworks.

3. Expedite and coordinate project implementation through collaborative relationships with executing agencies, government counterparts, experts and UN agencies and support capacity building activities for partners.

4. Analyse and report on programme progress, identify constraints and provide recommendations for corrective action.

5. Facilitate research, surveys and dissemination of results for evidence based advocacy and policy dialogue.

6. Assist in creating, documenting and sharing of knowledge about current and emerging
population and development trends, by analyzing programmes, projects, strategies,
approaches and ongoing experience for lessons learned and best practices.

7. Carry out any other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor/management

Desired background, skills and experience

The Candidate should possess at least a Master’s Degree in Population, Demography with statistics or other related social science field. In addition, the candidate should have at least 5 years experience in management of population programmes gained in the public sector or private sector.

The candidate should have the ability to manage relationships, possess good analytical and communication skills and be proficient in current office software applications

Language

For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Swahili is desirable.

Terms of Service

The incumbent to this position shall be entitled to an attractive remuneration package commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and in accordance with the criteria and earnings set by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for similar positions and levels of responsibility, which will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

This is a non-staff contract under the Service Contract modality of hiring of the UNFPA.

Individuals engaged under a SC serve in their individual capacity and not as representatives of a government institution, corporative body or other authority external to UNFPA.

Therefore the incumbent shall not be considered as staff of UNFPA, the UN system or the Government and therefore is not entitled to any diplomatic privileges, or to any other special status or conditions.

Conditions
  • The post is for an initial period of one (1) year, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.
  • This is an office-based appointment with limited travel to the field.
