CIMMYT is an internationally funded, non-profit research and training organization affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR, www.cgiar.org) and has an annual budget of nearly US$40 million. CIMMYT’s mission is to help the poor in the developing world by increasing the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat-based cropping systems while protecting natural resources. The Center is a global leader in scientific research and training related to maize and wheat, and in biotechnology, economics, and natural resource management research. These activities are conducted in partnership with national agricultural research systems, non-governmental organizations, and advanced research institutions, both public and private, in globally focused projects and programs. CIMMYT is seeking applications from innovative, self-motivated, outstanding Kenyan nationals for the position of Accountant, CIMMYT to provide leadership and accountability in the financial support to the CIMMYT-Kenya Country Office in all matters pertaining to project administration and management ensuring proper allocation and use of funds and be supervised by Senior Administrator/Programme Administrator GMP, under the overall supervision of the Director, CIMMYT GMP.

The primary responsibilities will include:

  • Provide financial guidance and support to CIMMYT-Kenya staff
  • Review activity reports’ budget component and arrange for internal and external audits
  • Routine correspondence and communication on financial matters with Headquarters and financial institutions, bank interactions
  • Develop and implement efficient procedures for budgeting and expenses, prepare and monitor Country Office budget
  • Supervise accounting staff and oversee processing of all bank transfers and reconciliations
  • Make postings into accounting system and prepare financial statements and reports
  • Ensure proper set up of accounting codes and system and update changes for CIMMYT-Kenya
  • Ensure cash in transit is properly secured and obtain appropriate insurance cover
  • Ensure compliance with host country government regulations – calculate all taxes and VAT reimbursements
  • Ensure adequate cash flow for country office needs and prepare schedules for transfers from CIMMYT Central account
  • Monitor NARS sub contract expenditures and budgets and coordinate expense reports from NARS
  • Provide training to NARS on CIMMYT accounting policies and procedures for NARS
  • Ensure all accounting policies and procedures are updated, implemented and adhered to
  • Ensure all staff is covered by budget over the period of their contracts
  • Ensure workshop budgets are fully costed and accounted for and assist in remittances of per diems and other workshop expenses to external recipients

We are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Commerce, Administration, or Finance with minimum CPA Part two preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in international NGOs
  • Experience working with donors and knowledge of donor requirements of funded projects
  • In-depth knowledge and hands on experience in accounting soft ware packages i.e Quick Books and Microsoft office suite
  • Good analytical , interpersonal , communication and report writing skills
  • Courtesy, tact and the ability to work and supervise staff in multi-cultural setting
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task in a busy working environment and must be a team player.
