Research Data Archivist Position Announcement: ILRI

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a globally networked research institute based in Africa.

ILRI works to help reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries.

Our staff work in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world. ILRI's headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, with a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Our staff are also based in partner institutions in other parts of Africa and in Asia and Latin America. We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one of 15 centres around the world sponsored by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

ILRI is seeking to recruit a Research Data Archivist to join the ILRI-ICRAF Research Methods Group (RMG). This is a joint group of ILRI and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) providing support to researchers in the areas of project & study design, research data management, data analysis & reporting and GIS/RS services.

Specific duties will include:
  • Designing and maintaining systems for managing and archiving research data, ensuring they are well documented and accessible to both internal and external users, depending on data ownership & sharing agreements.
  • Managing the archiving of research data for ILRI research projects. This includes both field data and associated documents (e.g. project proposals & reports, statistical analyses etc.).
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest tools and resources, including open-source software, for the storage and sharing of information
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to ILRI researchers on the design and implementation of research data storage and sharing systems, including quality assurance elements.
  • Regular auditing of selected ILRI projects to ensure research data management standards of preservation (archiving), exposure (sharing) and understandability (meta-data).
  • Liaising with ILRI-ICRAF ICT group to ensure suitable and sufficient server storage and associated software provision for research data.
  • Contribute to the overall work of the RMG, this may include: database design for specific projects, supervising of students attached to the group, etc.
The successful candidate should have:
  • BA/BSc degree in Computer Science, Statistics or related discipline
  • Training & experience in database design, database management and computer programming necessary
  • Experience in the development of web-based database systems an advantage
  • Computer skills in MS WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS, MySQL and at least one programming language (e.g. Visual Basic) plus typing skills a MUST.
  • Good communication ability in English, spoken and written, working knowledge of French an advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and good personal organisation skills required, including skills in mentoring and capacity building.
  • Good judgement and willingness to take initiative when appropriate
This is a new Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI's Nairobi campus and is an initial contract of 2 years with a possibility of renewal subject to funding and performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI's NRS scheme.
