Corporate Communications Officer
ILRI Nairobi Campus
Ref: CCO/NBO/03/2009

ILRI is seeking to recruit a Corporate Communications Officer for its ILRI- Nairobi campus who will be reporting to the Head of Public Awareness.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Help edit, illustrate, design and typeset ILRI's Public Awareness materials,
  • Ensuring the correct application of brand and corporate identity for all materials on the home and other public awareness pages.
  • Help select web Top Stories and source related materials for ILRI's bi-monthly ENews and then Illustrate, proofread, fact-check and format the E-newsletter, which serves as ILRI's primary communication vehicle for all its stakeholders.
  • Coordinate media requests both during and between media campaigns; work with international media consultants to develop media releases, backgrounders, visits and campaigns; build online press rooms for news releases; build and maintain strong relations with key local, regional and international media.
  • Build exhibits appropriate for given occasions and travel to outside meetings to erect ILRI displays, disseminate ILRI information and engage the media.
  • Manage public awareness events.
  • Maintain and develop contacts in the public awareness, design and electronic communications fields.
Key Professional Skills, Competencies and Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in areas of Journalism, advertising or communications
  • Minimum of 4 years relevant experience.
  • Training in graphics arts, writing, editing, design, layout, web work, database management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - verbal and written
  • Computer literate with knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite, Quark Express and Web management systems
  • Good people management skills
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI's Nairobi campus and is for a 2-year contract renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance.

ILRI is seeking to recruit the following positions to join its research projects

Genomics Technician
Ref: GT/BT/03/09

Specific duties will include:
  • To take primary responsibility for ensuring high quality DMA and RNA extraction, storage, management and analysis.
  • To include development of new protocols and procedures, monitoring of existing procedures and contribution to experimental design.
  • To manage sample sharing with local and overseas collaborators
  • Assisting Project leader(s), visiting scientists, postdoctoral research associates, graduate and undergraduate students with their research and orientation
The successful candidates should have:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in relevant discipline or equivalent
  • Good verbal and written communication skills necessary.
  • Attentive to detail and ability to modify protocols and develop new ones as appropriate
  • Competence in molecular and/or cell biology methods.
  • Competence in computer applications - especially use of databases, relevant internet resources and basic programming.
  • Experience of at least 2 years working in a molecular biology environment
Genomics Data Management Technician
Ref: GDMT/BT/03/2009

Specific duties will include:
  • To take primary responsibility for management of biological resources ! within the Project.
  • To provide quality control and biological specimen management.
  • To provide preliminary analysis and data representation.
  • To ensure appropriate training in the use of informatics tools to other staff.
  • To assist as required in a variety of laboratory processes including DNA/
  • RNA analysis and PCR, and documentation.
The successful candidate should have:
  • BSc degree, MSc degree is preferred.
  • Excellent computer programming and analytical skills, including database design and use.
  • Good interpersonal and supervisory skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Good understanding of Biological Sciences
  • At least 2 years experience working with complex data including data management, security and analysis.
Mouse Genomics Technician
Ref: MGT/BT/03/09

Specific Duties include:
  • To take responsibility for experimental design - particularly in small animals, execution, data management and analysis of laboratory experiments.
  • To assist as required in broader data management, and a variety of laboratory processes including DNA/RNA analysis and PCR, and documentation.
  • To take responsibility for management of project resources in the laboratory.
The successful candidate will have:
  • A BSc degree or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years experience working with small animal experiments including management of breeding and experimental designs as well as data management and analysis.
  • Good knowledge of population genetics, quantitative genetics or bioinformatics skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural research environment.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English essential.
These are Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI's Nairobi campus and are on a 2 year contract, renewable depending on performance of incumbent and availability of funds.

Intellectual Property/Legal Officer, ILRI Nairobi
Ref: IPLO/NBO3/2009

ILRI is seeking to recruit an Intellectual Property/Legal Officer for its ILRI-Nairobi campus who will be reporting to the Deputy Director (Research).

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Support research themes and other units in drafting research Agreements
  • Support research teams in negotiating agreement terms with ILRI research partners
  • Review research agreements/contracts in terms of IP related provisions
  • Review all institutional contracts/agreements and advice on legal issues.
  • Institutionalize IP management and develop an Intellectual Assets/ Intellectual property management strategy in line with ILRI's research and mission
  • Collaborate with regional stakeholders to enhance/build IP capacity in partner institutions
Key Professional Skills, Competencies and Position Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Intellectual property, LLM or related field
  • At least 5 years relevant work experience in managing intellectual property assets and in negotiating research contracts in research environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - verbal and written
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Good listener
  • Working experience with private sector organization will be an added advantage
