Repository, Communication and Scientific Affairs Assistant -Ref. CNHR/01/09

Job summary

Reporting to the Scientific Officer

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the establishment, development and implementation strategies of a knowledge repository and for building scientific awareness on CNHR programmes. This includes:
  • Provide leadership in the development and establishment of the knowledge repository for the Consortium;
  • Developing functional systems for enhanced knowledge repository system, information flow and set up innovative communication systems for the Consortium;
  • Responding to institutional and researcher queries on issues relating to the development of the knowledge repository and scientific programmes;
  • Planning for the development of the CNHR resource centre that will eventually be part of the content of the proposed knowledge repository;
  • Designing and mounting exhibitions on CNHR's scientific activities and developing public awareness materials for the Consortium's programs
  • Public relations (PR) and media liaison activities such as disseminating press releases
  • Organising international and regional meetings of scientific experts in relation to knowledge repository and centres of research excellence. This will include:
  • Rapporteuring, writing and editing proceedings of the expert meetings and issuing action briefs and alerts on issues requiring follow-up.
  • Communicating meeting decisions and outputs to various stakeholders pertaining to scientific knowledge management
  • Develop and manage inventoried databases on institutional and research contacts, donor funding opportunities etc. This will mainly form the content of the proposed knowledge management/ repository and includes:
  • Info-mining from various sources, such as institutional annual reports, scientific reports, project reports as well as the Internet.
  • Synthesize, summarize and repackage relevant information and make recommendations for further action.
  • Record and publish the Consortium activities through website, newsletter, annual reports, and policy briefs. The incumbent will design and typeset all the Consortium's publications newsletters and reports
  • Sort and circulate incoming general interest material related to issues of interest to Consortium partners;
  • Assist staff in finding electronic information, publication or documentation relevant to their work;
  • Maintain and manage program information and data
Requirements
  • Degree in health-related discipline or social sciences or information technology;
  • Postgraduate training in communication with a focus on health, knowledge management and scientific writing, editing and publishing
  • At least 3 years experience working in a busy research communications environment Relevant experience and skills
  • Specific competence in knowledge management and building onto a knowledge repository and user-friendly databases;
  • Be widely informed, possess excellent writing skills, have excellent communication skills (both written and spoken)and ability to produce accurate, reasoned and concise reports including summarising of complex information in jargon-free, plain language;
  • Practical and demonstrable experience of web development and maintenance, desk-top publishing, use of PowerPoint and sourcing, analysing, disseminating information;
  • Analytical skills to help the Consortium articulate its needs and help in finding solutions for the development of the knowledge repository;
  • Demonstrate flexibility and ability to learn the Consortium's core business and willingness to keep abreast with new developments in the public communication and media fields and other areas related to work assignments;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations;
  • Ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities to meet strict deadlines.
Program Officer-Institutional Support Projects: - Ref. CNHR/C2/09

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, the Program Officer-Institutional support projects - will manage grants for institutional infrastructure upgrading, multi-institutional research projects and support for establishment of Centres of Research Excellence (CORES) in accordance with the Consortium's regulations.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Provide sound management of Consortium institutional support grants, including review of proposals, grant negotiation, award, compliance monitoring, administration and closeout.
  • Participate in review of proposals including aassessing operational, evaluative, and financial aspects of proposals.
  • Manage the preparation of contracts, grant letters and grantee payments, material purchases, field visits, analysis of financial statements, adjustment of budgets and schedules, and project closures according to the Consortium's and Donor regulations;
  • Provide technical supervision, including analysis of interim reports, participation in workshops, literature searches, identification and administration of resource persons/consultants in support of grantees;
  • Review grantee financial and narrative reports to identify and resolve budget, compliance and/or other problems.
  • Obtain required closeout information from grantees and otherwise facilitate grant closeout process.
  • Manage relevant project evaluations and oversee the Consortium's institutional support monitoring evaluation and prepare project completion reports;
  • Ensure that the grants database is updated in a timely manner and play a role in the identifying, developing and managing the Consortium's contacts with other institutions.
Qualifications, experience and skills
  • A Masters degree in a science, social sciences or a relevant field.
  • At least five (5) years experience in project management
  • Proven knowledge and experience in program design, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Excellent computer skills particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel and databases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently to meet strict deadlines and manage and coordinate multiple demands yet remain focused and detail oriented.
  • Proven track record of donor relations and reporting
Driver – Ref: CNHR/03/09

Job summary

Reporting to the Executive Secretary, and will be responsible for carrying out all messenger duties. He/she will also be the driver for the Consortium.

Key responsibilities
  • Undertake driving duties as assigned by supervisor ensuring strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations as well as speed limits
  • Keep record of mileage in the logbook and record fuel consumption, oil changes, greasing etc
  • Take care of the day to day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s) and check oil, water, brakes, tyres, fire extinguisher etc., ensure the assigned vehicle is kept clean and promptly report technical malfunctions to the supervisor;
  • Allow only authorized personnel and goods in assigned vehicle.
  • Before proceeding on any trips, ensure that proper and thorough check of the vehicle is carried out
  • Perform miscellaneous office support functions such as messenger services
Qualifications and Experience
  • Successful completion of Kenya Secondary Education {KCSE}
  • Be in possession of a valid Driving license and those with motor qualifications will have an added advantage;
  • At least two years proven and continuous work experience as a driver with a safe driving record in an NGO or a reputable organization;
  • Certificate of good conduct
Skills
  • Experience in driving and maintaining different makes/modes of diesel and petrol vehicles including 4 wheel-drives.
  • Should be trustworthy, have a high sense of responsibility, be alert, physically fit and emotionally stable.
  • Should possess good communication skills in English and Kiswahili and be polite and willing to take and carry out instructions;
  • Must be tactful, punctual, and able to use common sense.
  • Should be able to work effectively with people of different cultural background within and outside CNHR.
Office Assistant - Ref. CNHR/04/09

Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Secretary

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform basic clerical tasks, operates basic office equipment and sorts and routes incoming mail, documents and materials.
  • Keep inventory and distributed office stationaiy
  • Photocopying large and small documents for the office
  • Binding of large and small documents for the office
  • Perform errands that assist daily functions: post office, bank e.tc.
  • General reception duties. Return calls as appropriate, usually per request
  • Cleaning the offices
Qualification and Experience
  • Minimum of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary School {KCSE}
  • Previous experience in an office setting required
  • Good organizational skills and record keeping {attention to detail critical]
  • Self starter who can work independently
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Keep the office neat and organized
  • Computer and data entry skills - added advantage
  • Pleasant telephone manners {phone etiquette}

Consultancy Opportunities to Identify Potential Kenyan Centres of Research Excellence in Health

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR) (www.cnhrkenya.org) is looking for experts who will carry out consultancy work to assist in the identification of potential Centres of Research Excellence in health in Kenya. Selected Centres will receive funds from CNHR to strengthen their capacity to conduct high quality multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research for health.

The consultancy will be undertaken in two stages involving the development of conceptional frameworks and carrying countrywide scoping studies.
