ICIPE Jobs in Kenya: Senior Research Assistant, Microbiology and Biochemistry - Natural Products Project

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 300 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.

icipe's Discovery of natural Products seeks to fill the position of Senior Research Assistant with a suitably qualified person in the field of Microbiology and Biochemistry.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required among other things to discharge the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct validation assays of naturally derived extracts and products for pest, vector and disease management;
  • Microbial quality control and analysis of products for pest, vector and disease management developed in the Project;
  • High through-put screening of biological samples for anti-microbial and insecticidal activities;
  • Characterization and biochemical analysis of bioactive compounds from microorganisms and plants;
  • Molecular phylogenetic analysis of microorganisms producing bioactive compounds;
  • Maintenance of microbial germplasm within the Project;
  • Recording and tracking of biological samples using the bar-coding system;
  • Ensuring maintenance of clean and safe laboratories as per international laboratory procedures;
  • Assist in the development of grant proposals;
  • Provide technical assistance to students within the Project;
  • Carry out advanced scientific experiments as described by scientists within icipe’s procedures and guidelines.
Requirements
  • Master of science degree in Biochemistry;
  • At least seven years experience in isolation, purification and characterization of bioactive molecules from microorganisms and plants using analytical and biochemical techniques;
  • Experience in High through-put (HTP) screening of samples for insecticidal and anti-microbial activities;
  • Experience in natural products development including validation, toxicity testing, formulation, optimization, packaging and marketing.
  • Experience in the use of GPS/GIS software required in field sampling;
  • Experience in sample tracking using bar-coding system;
  • Knowledge in Intellectual Property rights issues related to the discovery of natural products;
  • A team player with excellent communication skills;
  • Computer literate especially excel, access and internet.
