icipe’s Discovery of Natural Products Project seeks to fill the position of Senior Research Assistant, with a suitably qualified person in the field of chemistry.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required among other things to discharge the following duties and responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required among other things to discharge the following duties and responsibilities:
- Extraction, assay, quality control, formulation and product preparation of naturally derived extracts and products for pest, vector and disease management.
- Plant sample collection, preparation, extraction, separation and purification.
- High through-put screening of biological samples for insecticidal activities;
- Data entry and analysis using excel and dose response programmes
- Recording and tracking of biological samples using the bar-coding system;
- Ensuring maintenance of clean and safe laboratories as per international laboratory procedures;
- Assist in the development of grant proposals;
- Provide technical assistance to students within the Project;
- Carry out advanced scientific experiments as described by scientists within icipe’s procedures and guidelines.
- Assist in administrative work within the Project which includes communication, preparation of visiting scientists’ documents;
- Maintain confidentiality of information obtained in the course of research work.
- Keeping inventory of chemicals and materials used in the laboratory.
Requirements
- Higher National diploma in Applied Chemistry (Analytical Option).
- At least 7 years experience on field sampling and use of GPS/GIS software, PDA, Digital camera, cryoscopic sampling methods;
- Familiar with sample processing procedures/ techniques such as concentration, size reduction, extraction and purification using appropriate equipment.
- At least 6 years experience on High Through Put screening (HTP) of samples for insecticidal and anti-microbial activities;
- Handle and maintain stored grain pests.
- Quality control and formulation of naturally derived products for pest, vector and disease management..
- Experience on data entry and analysis, using excel, access and internet
- Certificate in Fire fighting and emergency aid.
- Valid Driving License.
