Qualified Kenyan Nationals are invited to apply for the position of Education Specialist, to be located at the UNICEF Somalia Support Centre in Nairobi.

The successful candidates will be offered a Fixed Term Appointment for 1 year.

Further extension will be based on organization needs, funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Purpose of the Post:

Under the technical guidance of the Education Specialist/Coordinator for the Strategic Partnership in Education, the incumbent will be responsible for developing and supporting capacity building programmes in all three zones.

The post entails ensuring that the capacity development goal, which is embedded in the Strategic Partnership Work Plan translates into effective capacity building strategies and interventions at the zonal level.

The incumbent will be expected to support UNICEF staff and implementing partners in their efforts to ensure that this objective is reached in an effective and timely manner.

Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership and support to zonal staff in identifying, assessing and strengthening the institutional and organisational capacity of eight regional Women’s Education Networks (5 regional in Somaliland, 1 national in Puntland and 2 regional in South Centre Somalia).
  • Provide technical assistance in building the capacity of Ministry of Education staff in monitoring and reporting in order to enhance overall service delivery in all three zones. This will be done in tandem with strengthening the capacity of zonal education staff in this area to ensure that joint monitoring of interventions leads to more effective programming.
  • Provide assistance in the development and implementation of strategies that both mitigate barriers to girls’ education and increase enrolment, retention and transition rates including a feasibility study on the local production of low-cost sanitary towels for girls in Puntland.
  • To participate in the systematic monitoring of key capacity development interventions undertaken by UNICEF and contribute to the development of an effective monitoring and evaluation framework. Provide monitoring and field trip reports that contribute to programmatic decisions on strengthening and/or realignment of activities.
  • Prepares training/mentoring and progress reports, as well as background material for use by Education Specialist/Coordinator of the Strategic Partnership, reviews incoming emails and exchange of correspondence ensuring that all technical documents, reports and correspondence related to the programme are properly maintained for easy reference.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Additional duties include support to the Strategic Partnership Coordinator and zonal officers in the development of PCAs and presentation to the CRC, identification of teaching and learning materials and support in development of content for teacher training and T/L materials, participation in review of proposals and identification of partners for the Strategic Partnership for Recovery and Development of Education in Somalia.

Qualifications, experience & Skills
  • Advanced University degree in Education, Social Sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional work experience in education programmes with a focus on capacity building, training/mentoring, communication, programme monitoring and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the latest issues, development and trends in education, institutional capacity development and monitoring and evaluation in postconflict situations
  • Communication, advocacy, analytical and facilitation training/mentoring skills.
  • Good knowledge of computer management and applications i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools, etc.
  • Ability to work in an international and multi-cultural environment
