The largest country in Africa, Sudan, has suffered as a result of a long-standing civil war that has killed over 2 million people and displaced many more.

The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement has helped the effective provision of some much needed relief and development assistance to the South that was previously not possible, however, the future is now precarious.

Oxfam GB is looking at how to best leverage change in multiple areas of Southern Sudan, through short and long-term programme interventions, bridging humanitarian, development and advocacy work.

If you are keen to lead on making that change work, and be involved in a period of major political and social shift, then you are just the person we are looking for.

The role

As the deputy country director, you will lead on the programme development and delivery in Southern Sudan, coupled with management of all field offices and programme technical staff.

Reporting to the country director, you will be responsible for the management of operational activity within the programme.

You will provide strategic leadership and direction to all programme teams, to deliver strong programmes in women’s rights, public health, peace building, livelihoods, emergency response and disaster/risk reduction.

You will also analyse the social, economic and political context in Southern Sudan in order to help ensure proper management of Oxfam GB’s responsibilities in Southern Sudan.

Equally important, you will represent Oxfam at various levels, as well as support on policy and communication related issues, connecting people in communities to Oxfam’s global voice.

You will plan and implement fundraising plans as well as produce, analyse and assimilate the use of programme information from diverse sources.

The person

You will be a natural, inspirational leader with substantial proven experience of managing complex humanitarian & development programmes internationally.

You will have extensive experience in people, financial and funding management, and sound experience in linking development and humanitarian work with policy advocacy.

With an appreciation for the aims and objectives of Oxfam GB in the region and an understanding of Sudan's current context, you will be actively involved with the wider challenges that are connected with the programme.

You will be dedicated and sympathetic to the cause of both Oxfam GB as a whole and the people of Sudan.

Often working under challenging conditions, you’ll be confident in your ability to consistently produce high standards under pressure as you lead a multi cultural team.

With proven analytical and planning expertise, you’ll take a strategic approach to finding lasting solutions to poverty and suffering in Southern Sudan.

This is a challenging opportunity for a dedicated and highly motivated professional, with a strong commitment to Oxfam's values and beliefs.
