The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries, working in partnership with organisations in developing countries.

ILRI hosts Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) a new centre for excellence in modern plant, microbe and animal biology in Africa. It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region.

BecA facilitates, hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe, and livestock research areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa's development

ILRI seeks to recruit a Greenhouse Supervisor to provide technical support and management of the newly built greenhouse making it accessible to hosted institutions and BecA scientists, visiting scientists and graduate students using the BecA-ILRI Hub facilities for crop research.

Specific duties will include:
  • Greenhouse/screen-house equipment management: procurement, maintenance, safety and training.
  • Provide technical support to scientists and graduate students working on a wide range of crop related research projects, and management of greenhouse and screen house operations.
  • Assist with developing and conducting individual and group training in greenhouse technologies.
  • Manage greenhouse space requests and allocations.
  • Construct and update databases of greenhouse usage, technologies, services and equipment
  • Develop and ensure a full cost recovery system for users
  • Ensure adherence to good greenhouse/screen-house practices including proper maintenance of equipment and other parts of the greenhouse for smooth and proper operations.
  • Coordinating purchase requisition of consumable stock items (including continuous supply of sterilized soil/sand mixtures; for greenhouse.
  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures for biotech crop technologies and services.
The successful candidate should have:
  • A Master's degree in Biological Sciences with 2 years of experience (including greenhouse use and/or management) or alternatively a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy or crop sciences with 5 years experience in greenhouse use and management.
  • Experience in a crop science research environment, specifically including tissue culture and plant nutrition plus a good working knowledge of crop husbandry and biotech crops and related safety issues.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse health and safety procedures
  • Computer literacy in Ms Office programs is ESSENTIAL.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team setting.
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken.
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI's Nairobi campus and is for a 2-year contract renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI's NRS scheme.
