Web Administrator Job Vacancy: Education Development Center (EDC)

EDC's Sudan Radio Service project has an opening for a position of a Web Administrator, reporting to the EDC ICT Coordinator in Nairobi.

Sudan Radio Service (SRS) is a USAID-supported project that delivers accurate, balanced news and information to the people of Sudan—via shortwave broadcasts heard nationally and an FM broadcast heard in Juba, southern Sudan. SRS has a team of nearly 40 journalists/producers based in Sudan and Nairobi, Kenya who report news and develop informational programming based on the journalistic principles of fairness and accuracy.

The SRS Web Administrator is responsible for revamping and maintaining EDC's Sudan-oriented project websites, as well working with management and other IT staff in developing an internal platform that would be used by staff to submit timesheets, travel advances, annual leave requests.

Duties:

Overall Responsibility:

  • Lead the planning and implementation of web content and design for EDC's Sudan Radio Service (SRS) and Southern Sudan Interactive Radio Instruction (SSIRI) projects' websites (www.sudanradio.org and www.ssiri.org, respectively), including the development and oversight of the team's project management methodology.
  • Maintain the content on the websites, including daily news and audio file updates on SRS' site.
  • Work with appropriate project staff to develop and maintain new information on the sites.
  • Design and implement the information architecture of the projects' websites, ensuring that visitors can easily navigate them.
  • Work with organization staff to identify, index, and make available knowledge resources.
  • Continually develop and maintain organization's thesaurus (keywords) for use in indexing content.
  • Ensure that projects' websites are designed and deployed in a manner that is as accessible and user-friendly as possible.
  • Develop and implement the editorial calendar for the home pages and other areas of the sites.
Design:
  • Design encompasses the creation of graphics and html templates for the websites, as well as multimedia.
  • Oversee the design of the organization web site, making sure that a consistent look and feel is maintained.
  • Serve as technical person for the visual and multimedia content of organization's web sites. Develop and maintain the overall look and feel of organization's web sites.
  • Manage and design the creative aspect of web projects, including serving as an expert resource to organization staff involved in specific projects.
  • Design HTML templates and supporting graphics that are consistent with organization's design standards.
  • Develop and maintain visual design guidelines for the web site ensuring that outside advertisements to place on the web site meet organization standards.
  • Design graphical user interfaces for web-based applications on organization's web servers, such has SharePoint.
Online Community:
  • Online community covers any activity related to connecting members, customers or clients electronically. The most common activities are online forums and e-mail list serves. Online communities require hands-on attention by staff in order to really flourish.
  • Monitor and maintain online forums on a daily basis, including topic pruning, archiving, creating new forums and moving topics.
  • Notify appropriate staff about online discussions or inquiries that should receive a response from the organization.
  • Schedule and prepare special speakers and participants for online events.
Other:
  • Periodic report writing and other administrative duties will also be necessary.
  • Develop monthly activity reports on activity in the online community and on organization's professional site.
  • Monitors web site performance and makes necessary adjustments to insure maximum availability and performance including web site capacity planning.
  • Maintains synchronization of production and development web servers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology
  • 5+ years of relevant IT experience
  • Proficiency in web development software such as: Dream weaver, Photoshop, Flash and Fireworks, Olive, Frontpage (, HTML, DHTML and XML, JavaScript, Active Server Pages (ASP), CSS, PHP, .NET, Working knowledge of content Management Software (CMS) required
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with a culturally diverse team.
  • Speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Knowledge of Arabic or a southern Sudanese language would be a plus.
  • Work timely and effectively to meet deadlines.
Location: The Web Administrator will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, but will travel as necessary and assigned into Sudan.
