Motor Vehicle Mechanic - CARE International in Kenya

CARE International in Kenya is seeking to employ a suitably qualified candidate for the position of Motor Vehicle Mechanic for its Emergency and Refugee Operations (ERO) Programme in Dadaab Garissa District. The position requires an innovative and self motivated individual, well versed with the complexities and dynamics of working in a multi cultural environment.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, the Motor Vehicle Mechanic will be responsible for diagnosing and conducting preventive maintenance so as to ensure that all vehicles, plant and equipment meet set repair and maintenance standards. She/he will be required to comply with the Workshop Standard Operating Procedure, Internal Control Procedure and CARE' Kenya's vehicle management guidelines.

Key Responsibilities and tasks.

  • Carry out the Preventive maintenance and repair of vehicles, plant and equipment including but not limited to trucks, off road 4x4 vehicles, tractors, Agro - trailers, Backhoe loaders, and heavy vehicles.of various makes, types and models.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, electronic and computerized vehicle gadgets, air brakes, EFI etc.
  • Completion of work orders / job cards of the assigned repair jobs.
  • Interpret instructions, technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and other guides to conduct repairs and modifications.
  • Skilled usage of measuring instruments and test equipment such as engine analyzers, injector testers, ignition timers, lactometers, ammeters, ohmmeters etc.
  • Test and operate vehicles and equipment as required and observe evidence of abnormal or normal operation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Must have attained Craft part III certificate or equivalent qualification in automotive, mechanical or agricultural engineering and an "O" level Secondary education Grade C -.
  • All round training and hands on experience acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent and ability to multi-task with 5years experience in an ISO: 9001-2000 certified organization.
  • Knowledge of vehicle computer-controlled systems, engine fuel and ignition, ABS braking and transmission functions.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • A Valid, accident free driving license preferably with Class B, C, E.
  • Current Certificate of Good Conduct
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, in English and Kiswahili.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a difficult environment and be able to work to tight deadlines and targets even beyond working hours as She/he may be occasionally required to work at night, weekends and holidays.
  • Computer literate with good knowledge of MS office.
