Disaster Risk Reduction Policy Advisor Job Vacancy: ActionAid

ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency working in over 40 countries, taking sides with poor people to end poverty and injustice together.

Contract type: 18 months on National terms and conditions of service.

Location: Nairobi, Kenya, or any of the other DRRS project countries -Ghana, Malawi, Nepal, Bangladesh or India

Salary: £17,306.00 p.a. plus benefits

The Human Security and Emergencies Team is seeking to recruit a Policy Advisor for the Disaster Risk Reduction through Schools (DRRS) project.

Reporting to the DRRS International Project Manager the incumbent will be expected to work with the DflD-funded Disaster Risk Reduction through Schools project to influence the adoption of DRR policies at national level in the 7 project countries ((Haiti, Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, India)), and to expand the influence in other countries/projects where ActionAid works (e.g. DIPECHO and Greek government-funded DRR projects) The post holder will work closely with country teams to identify key lessons learned and ensure that these are used in our policy advocacy work.

The aim is to make schools and communities in high-risk disaster areas safer, enabling them to act as a locus for disaster risk reduction, institutionalizing implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action within national governments' policies

  • Learning and Documentation The incumbent will demonstrate
  • Proven experience in policy analysis and development
  • Good political judgment and proven track record of lobbying at a senior level and influencing government policy
  • Strong analytical, report writing, and presentation skills, including the ability to present complex issues clearly and concisely
  • Excellent networking, negotiation and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively by support, facilitation, and co-ordination
  • Proven initiative, flexibility and ability to prioritize in a demanding environment and to tight deadlines
  • Experience in managing consultants
  • Ability to work with diverse teams in multi-cultural environments
  • Experience in working with the media
  • willingness to travel extensively, particularly to ActionAid DRRS and DIPECHO project countries
  • A strong commitment to ActionAid's values
