DESCRIPTION and RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities: Within delegated authority, the Information Technology Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Organizes and controls computer equipment, networks and software applications with regard to installation, systems support and maintenance in the mission;
  • Assists in the preparation and implementation of security and contingency policies with integration of network systems in the mission.
  • Provides necessary security measures against user passwords, login rights, email and Internet threats like computer viruses, hacker attacks etc;
  • Provides installation, administration and maintenance of local and wide area networks (LAN/WAN) in the mission including supervision of laying ducting and cables, configuration and installation of file servers, set up of hubs, switches, modems and network printers;
  • Install and set up CISCO switches, routers and wireless equipment;
  • Administers the Windows NT, Novell NetWare, Lotus Notes servers, creates and manages user network and email accounts, resources and security access rights;
  • Integrates and manages network resources with NDS and ZEN;
  • Performs regular backups for the network servers, performs recovery when necessary and prepares disaster recovery plans for the network resources;
  • Troubleshoots the network problems including servers, cables and other connectivity devices and monitors the performance of LAN/WAN in the mission;
  • Integrates new software and updates into existing systems, implements systems changes trough network resources;
  • Provides on-site technical support to the users as required and provides assistance and training on the usage of the UN software applications and local area network;
  • Develops technical documentation for installed local/wide area networks;
  • Maintains accurate records of requests and provided services;
  • Provides technical support to Office Automation Unit in implementation and troubleshooting of applications; Assists in systems analysis, design and implementation of mission automation projects;
  • Facilitates the assets control and physical inventory of EDP equipment
  • Perform any other task assigned by his supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Candidates must have a technical certificate in computers science or similar.

Experience: Over 6 years of experience in information technology or related area, with thorough knowledge of LAN/WAN design and implementation. Experience on network security is a plus for candidates.

Driving License: Candidates must be in position of a driving license and be able to pass the UN driving examination test.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
