African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) Jobs: Executive Assistant and M&E Country Managers

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and developmental issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.

The Center seeks to recruit an Executive Assistant and two Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Country Managers.

Executive Assistant
(Application Deadline: November 13, 2009)

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing administrative support to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), he/she will be responsible for:
  • Acting as liaison to all divisions of APHRC, Board of Directors, donors & other external groups;
  • Maintaining ED’s schedule by planning and scheduling meetings, conferences, teleconferences, travel, etc;
  • Receiving and sorting incoming correspondence and documents for the ED;
  • Providing effective communications support in order to ensure efficient flow of information and actions on instructions and agendas;
  • Drafting correspondence on behalf of the ED for signature and making follow up when required;
  • Organizing and maintaining the filing system ensuring safekeeping of confidential materials;
  • Following up on deadlines, commitments made, and action taken, and coordination of collection and submission of reports to the ED;
  • Screening incoming calls and correspondence;
  • Responding to general enquiries about the programs and projects of the Center; and
  • Supervising the personal driver to the ED.
Qualifications and experience:
  • At least a bachelor’s degree, preferably in administration
  • Computer literacy and excellent working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the internet
  • At least 5 years experience at a senior administrative support level, preferably in an NGO or research organization
  • Strong interpersonal, organization and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Detail oriented, self motivated and dependable
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet deadlines
  • Initiative and innovation in assessing situations, troubleshooting, conflict resolution, team building

M&E Country Managers – Re-advertisement

One of the APHRC’s main activities over the next five years includes the Measurement, Learning, and Evaluation (MLE) Project for the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI), to be implemented in urban areas of selected sub-Saharan African countries.

The goal of the URHI, which will be implemented by different in-Country Consortium (ICC), is to test and document cost-effective integrated interventions to increase modern contraceptive prevalence rates.

To undertake this large-scale research program, APHRC seeks to recruit two Country Managers for Senegal and Kenya, to provide research technical assistance on the MLE Project for these countries.

The main duties for these positions include field-based research technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge management.

The Senegal Country Manager position will be based in Dakar, Senegal or Nairobi, Kenya (with 50% travel to Senegal), while the Kenya Country Manager position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. Both will report to the MLE Project Manager

Duties
  • Work with the URHI Country Consortium and in-Country M&E partner(s) and provide research technical assistance in all aspects of the study, including the refinement of tools for data collection, mapping, sampling, training, implementation of fieldwork, and data entry/analysis;
  • Develop training materials and carry out formal capacity building activities in monitoring and evaluation;
  • Perform results reporting and assist project management to develop donor reports and related materials;
  • Document best practices emanating from the intervention and its evaluation;
  • Act as a focal point for the gathering, recording and reporting of information on the project in the country, preparing information briefs and coordinating responses to requests for information from other internal units and from external parties; and
  • Liaise with all relevant national stakeholders.
Essential Skills
  • MA, MSc, or MPH in any one of the following disciplines: Public Health/Epidemiology, Demography, Sociology, Anthropology or Development Studies. PhD preferred;
  • At least five years of hands-on experience in conducting field-based monitoring and evaluation of population and reproductive health activities in developing countries;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks, meet deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with other project staff and with national and international institutions;
  • Initiative and innovation in assessing situations, conflict resolution, team building
  • Fluency in English (Kenya Country Manager) and fluency in both English and French (Senegal Country Manager); and
  • Strong ability to use MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and statistical software (STATA, SPSS) for data analysis;
Desirable
  • Experience working in urban areas or slum settings of Senegal/Kenya;
  • Experience with GIS mapping and analysis of geospatial data; and
  • Good record of publications, especially in family planning and reproductive health.
