International Center for Tropical Agriculture - CIAT Jobs in Kenya: East and Central Africa Bean Research Network (ECABREN) - Coordinator

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture - CIAT is one of 15 not-for-profit Centers funded mainly by various countries, private foundations, international and regional organizations that make up the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Through its research activities, CIAT aims to achieve a more eco-efficient agriculture at the service of the less privileged rural farming communities of Latin America and the tropical world.

CIAT research is organized in three major areas:

(1) improved crops for the poor,

(2) improved soil fertility management, and

(3) Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

East and Central Africa Bean Research Network (ECABREN) - Coordinator

CIAT is seeking applications for the position of ECABREN -Coordinator.

The position will seek to strengthen the efforts in implementing the new phase of the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA), an alliance founded in 1996 as a consortium of African-owned regional bean networks, consisting of National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in a total of 24 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, an international research organisation (CIAT) and a number of donor organisations.

Responsibilities

Specific activities relate to:
  • Support ECABREN to contribute and implement PABRA research and development agenda and program.
  • Facilitate ECABREN (and PABRA Joint) Steering Committee to discharge its oversight role of the network.
  • Contribute in developing collaborative projects and mobilization of new financial resources for the network and PABRA.
  • Liaise with national and regional research and development institutions in the ECABREN region so as to exploit synergy and comparative advantages in developing and executing PABRA's programmes.
  • Offer guidance and enhance capacity of ECABREN partners in the development and implementation of regional sub-projects, activities, and programmes.
  • Represent ECABREN in national and regional fora
  • Facilitate linkages between SABRN, WECABREN, Afnet, Harvest Plus, SSACP, and other CIAT and CGIAR Centers projects and programs to enhance synergy.
  • Conduct original research in defined speciality areas in collaboration with other ECABREN / PABRA scientists.
Requirements
  • PhD in agricultural sciences. Preferably in IPDM or Natural Resource Management.
  • At least seven years experience in agricultural research with demonstrated management experience.
  • Excellent written and spoken English with French an added advantage.
  • Excellent networking skills, alliance-building experience and cross-disciplinary work
Terms of employment

The position is internationally recruited under the Researcher category and will report to the Regional Coordinator for Africa and to the Program Bean Leader.

The contract will initially be for a 2-year period, renewable subject to assessment of performance.
