Program description: This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. The collaboration has expanded to service provision in the area of HIV/AIDS and is providing Home Based testing and counseling to residents of Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi. Due to its continued growth the program has Vacancies in the Gap HIV Testing and counseling program-home based testing and counseling in Kibera (Nairobi)


Position: HIV Counselors (15 positions) (MR6)

Location: Kibera Nairobi

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Certificate in HIV Counseling
* Certificate in Counseling.
* Excellent and proven written and verbal English and spoken Kiswahili.
* Available to work at least 2 weekends per month, as needed.



DESIRABLE QUALITIES

* Experience in field work and public health research
* Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet set targets
* Respectful and sensitive to individual rights and authority
* Ability to draw venal blood from adults and children
* Current residents of Nairobi and experience working in Kibera or other slum settings



Additional qualifications will have added advantage

* Certificate in Nursing or Laboratory Technician
* Certificate in Nursing or Laboratory technician.



Job summary: Reporting to Home-based and counseling field coordinator, the counselor/Phlebotomist will perform home-based voluntary counseling and testing services to participants of the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi

Duties and responsibilities:

* Perform home-based HIV testing in a confidential and efficient manner in Kibera.
* Travel from home,-door to door in sometimes difficult terrain and bad weather.
* Perform HIV testing of adults and children.
* Accurate collection and recording of data on persons undergoing home-based testing using scannable forms.
* Effectively and appropriately manage sensitive situations alone in the field, such as HIV discordant couples.
* Ensure that participant privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
* Make appropriate referrals for HIV care and treatment.
* Provide emotional and professional support for clients testing HIV positive.
* Follow directions and instructions from supervisors.
* Perform other duty as may be assigned by management



TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: a six 1 year contract, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
