Nurses (4 Positions) KEMRI/CDC Program Jobs in Kenya

Program description:

This program is a collaboration between The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) whose main merit is to conduct research in Malaria, HIV parasitology, TB and other diseases.

Due to its continued growth, the TB Research Branch has vacancies for nurses.

Position: Nurses (4 Positions)

Location: Karemo Division- Siaya District

Essential requirements:
  • Diploma in Kenya registered Community Health Nursing with at least one year paediatric experience.
  • Ability to communicate in Luo and Swahili is an added advantage.
Skills, Knowledge and abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well with the public and in a team.
  • General Knowledge of management of paediatric ailments, TB, HIV.
  • Must be willing to live in Siaya and work on weekends.
Basic Functions:
  • The nurse will report to the nursing supervisor, and the senior clinical personnel at the clinic.
  • The primary responsibilities for the position are to register study participants, complete study forms, conduct physical examinations, dispense medicine and collect lab specimen.
Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Administer trial product to volunteers
  • Triage paediatric patients at outpatient clinics and initiate resuscitation.
  • Assist with referral of ill participants to the hospital as needed
  • Record and maintain specified patient logs, adverse event documentation
  • Carry out nutritional counselling, HIV counseling and testing
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and the community.
  • Conduct screening and enrolment procedures together with other clinical staff as per protocol
  • Maintain a good relationship with the community and other clinic staff
  • Must develop an in depth understanding of the study’s goals and the logistics required to conduct the study
  • Excellent social, communication and listening skills, open minded and non-judgmental.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team member.
  • Perform accurate record keeping and check study forms for completeness and accuracy each day
  • Carry out follow up procedures, give basic health education, train parents on safety reporting
  • Report problems encountered to study supervisor
  • Performs other duties assigned by the study manager and designated supervisors.
Terms of Employment:

The Contract is renewable at the option of the Program with agreement of the employee for six (6) one year periods after the initial period.

Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration:

Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.

The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
