Study Nurse KEMRI/CDC Program Job in Kenya

Program description:

This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It involves conducting research and program support for activities related to malaria, HIV and other diseases.

Due to its continued growth, the Malaria Branch has the following vacancy in the Mal-055 Study (Malaria Vaccine study).

Position: Study Nurse (1 position)
MR 6 (Job Group J)

Location: Siaya District Hospital

Essential Requirement
  • Certificate in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing.
  • Must be Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Minimum of 1 year of direct patient contact, direct clinical care to infants, immunization,
  • Must live near Clinics and hospitals in Siaya District.
Desired Qualities
  • Previous research experience with GCP training would be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of Luo will be added advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well with the public, in a team and able to collaborate well with counterparts
Position description:

Nurses will report to the Medical Officer in charge of the mobile vaccination team and will carry out clinical/nursing duties and data collection for the clinical trial.

Specific Duties and responsibilities:
  • Consent study participants and take medical histories, perform physical exams during screening and enrollment.
  • To attend to study participants admitted in hospital and do daily ward rounds.
  • Assist in referral of ill children for hospitalization as needed.
  • To accurately and completely fill out all study forms.
  • Helps ensure good communication, quality and timely completion of clinical trial activities, including problem identification and problem solving.
  • Keep records and check study forms for completeness and accuracy each day.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the algorithm which guides the clinical assessment and investigation of sick children.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the study case definitions, procedures, design and goals.
  • Perform Verbal autopsy on all cases of mortality occurring at home
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and others.
  • Report problems encountered in the field to the clinical supervisor.
  • Must be flexible to work within the existing structure.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
Terms of Employment:

Six (6) one year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration:

Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.

The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
