Environmental Health & Safety Executive and Maintenance Engineer

Job Title: Environmental Health & Safety Executive

Job Summary

The jobholder is responsible for implementation and maintenance of the best practices of environment, health and safety standards within the Green Leaf Threshing factory and the leaf centres within the country in line with legal and corporate requirements.

This includes ensuring availability of the emergency equipments within the Green Leaf Threshing factory and leaf centres in line with the legal and corporate requirements.

Key Responsibilities

* Inspection of the premises for identification of unusual activities/situations that may be regarded as potential hazards
* Monitoring of contractors activities for compliance to the EHS guidelines and Permit To Work process
* Inspection of first aid kits and collation of incident reports
* Inspection of fire equip/nents, fire alarm and suppression systems
* Carrying out induction training for all new contractor employees and site entry assessments
* Prepare and plan for EHS in-house trainings
* Participate in incident accident investigations
* Monitor waste management/segregation process
* Manage of the fumigation and pest control programme
* Ensure availability of adequate number of trained first aiders, fire fighters and ambulance drivers.
* Ensure implementation of the fire alarm, fumigation, maintenance of fire fighting equipment and effluent treatment contracts are carried out correctly and on time.
* Ensure availability of adequate and quality personal protective equipment.
* Ensure that best proven sustainable environmental practices are taking place within the leaf growing areas
* Coordinate internal EHS reviews and audits
* Preparation and management of all EHS records and documentation
* Coordinate the various statutory/corporate medical check ups for staff and contractors onsite.
* Organise for trainings to the leaf centres with regards to the best re-afforestation methods and sustainable agricultural practices.
* Liaise with external auditors for statutory audits, Government inspectors for facilitation of inspections and other external stakeholders on EHS issues.
* Develop and implement ideas that will enhance the EHS awareness

Skills and Experience

* 5 years working in a FMCG factory 3 of which must have worked as Plant engineer or similar capacity and 2 years working in an Environment Health and Safety Position.
* Interpersonal skills: Effective communication and influencing skills
* Sound understanding of risk management principles and their application in business

Education

* Degree/Higher diploma in Mechanical Engineering
* A qualification in EHS will be an added advantage
* Competent in computer skills

Job Title: Maintenance Engineer
Function: Operations

Location: Kenya

Reporting To: Factory Engineer
Response Deadline: 29th January 2010

Job Summary

The primary role of the maintenance engineer is to ensure the optimisation of all plant and machinery to support the overall manufacturing programme through an effective preventive maintenance programme, reduction of machine short stops & maintenance improvement strategies.

The role is also accountable for the delivery of significant tactical & strategic capital expenditure projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

The role holder will be expected to support operations across manufacturing - SMD, PMD & GLT and provide engineering assistance to the factory engineer

Key Responsibilities

* Provide leadership and direction for technical and maintenance related systems to deliver optimal plant performance with respect to safety, quality, productivity & schedule attainment
* Budget preparation and budget optimisation for plant maintenance, spares parts and energy savings initiatives
* Lead the introduction & practice of ISO
* Lead and direct projects to ensure that all projects are completed within budget, quality specifications and set timelines.
* Ensure the timely resolution of machine breakdown problems, scheduling for planned opportunistic and unplanned maintenance work.
* Lead & promote EHS as an important value within the company by ensuring that all plant & equipment operations are done in a safe and efficient manner
* Motivate & coach direct reports to ensure the highest level of performance
* Identify, develop & coach potential successors to ensure there is a healthy talent pipeline within the department
* Maintain close communication with other manufacturing team members to deliver optimal productivity of manufacturing resources
* Ensure information is shared in a timely manner by regularly updating management & key stakeholders on the progress of various projects and their impact of business performance
* Ensure close collaboration & coordination between regional engineering, suppliers, consultants, Nairobi factory team, regulatory agencies, contractors & project teams to realise project objectives.
* Proactively use the gap analysis tools to improve machine efficiencies & reliability
* Provide leadership to the team in pursuing practices that will improve efficiency, reduce obsolescence & realise savings
* Lead the team in developing local technical solutions

Skills and Experience

* 2 years working experience within maintenance in a FMCG
* Exposure to world class manufacturing philosophies e.g. TPM, LEAN, ISO, SMED, GEMBAKAIZEN
* Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
* Good people leadership & management skills
* Ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines
* Excellent analytical skills with a systems based mindset to problem solving
* Good financial management skills

Education

* BSc Mechanical, Electrical or Production Engineering
