Founded in 1958, Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) is an international nonprofit organization that works to build bridges between educational research, policy, and practice.
Funded by the United States Agency for International Development, EDC is implementing a project called G-Youth based in the North Eastern Province of Garissa, Kenya.
The Garissa Youth Project (G-Youth) is designed to empower youth to make sound career and life decisions as they transition from high-school to the next phase of their lives.
The project offers youth interventions that help them to: build skills, facilitate appropriate career choices, provide employment and/or income generating information, bridge technical and university education opportunities and provide a fun and safe space for youth to socialize.
Through the addition of a new project component which is helping to redefine the strategic direction for the project, G-Youth now aims to build the capacity of local youth organizations and networks to increase youth participation and planning in program
activities meant to help youth.
Title: Youth Action Summit Coordinator
(Short-term consultancy)
Summary:
The Youth Action Summit Coordinator is a key actor in the development and planning for the Youth Action Symposia and Summit anticipated to take place between the period: February 1– April 30, 2010.
The person in this position will be an experienced professional in youth development programs and event planning, and will have demonstrated abilities to mobilize youth to engage and actively participate in the Youth Summit and events leading up to the Summit.
S/he will coordinate, promote and represent the G-Youth project to local project partners in the NGO community, local government, youth, and educators in coordination and collaboration with the management and senior leadership of the project.
This person will also provide oversight and technical assistance in the development and implementation of training activities relevant to the Youth Summit and provide input to the logistical components to planning key events.
During the first several weeks of the project, the Youth Action Summit Coordinator will work closely with the G-Youth Deputy Director or his designee and Youth Development Specialist in coordinating Summit activities with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, local businesses and other program partners.
The incumbent will also contribute to the design and coordination of the activities to be carried out at the G-Youth Career Resource Center.
The Youth Action Summit Coordinator will report directly to the Acting Project Director for G-Youth or his designee.

- Contributes to the development of the strategic direction, coordination and planning for the Youth Symposia and Summit with G-Youth’s management and technical team.
- Provides and coordinates technical assistance and support to all aspects of identifying youth leaders and mobilizing these leaders to fully participate in the agenda and activities related to carrying out a successful youth symposia and Summit events.
- Spearheads the logistical planning for Youth Action events and provides technical assistance and support as necessary to the logistics planning assistant.
- Monitors levels of participation and contributes written documentation on it to the development of event reports.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 3 – 5 years of youth development experience.
- Solid experience in computer applications and Internet research.
- Strong commitment to mobilizing and creating opportunities for youth interested in self-development.
- Strong analytical skills and aptitude for details.
- Experience in working with teams of consultants, advisers and partners.
- Demonstrable organizational and troubleshooting skills.
- Flexibility and ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize duties.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Able to give and accept feedback
- Good proof-reading skills and command of style and accuracy in writing.

- Develops and delivers training; Identifies and mentors others with training roles.
- Helps with the development of communications tools, including but not limited to web sites, radio announcements, newsletters, briefing papers, project reports and studies.
- Collaborates with Technical Program Team to plan and conduct youth forums and training workshops
- Works with the Ministry of Youth Affairs on the development of appropriate training activities and helps to market them to established youth groups
- Contributes to the development of planning work plans, and event reports
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) plus 3-5 years related experience on youth development issues.
- Experienced trainer.
- Preferably at least 2 years of experience working in an international organization.
- Background in youth leadership development; commitment to youth empowerment.
- Solid familiarity in computer applications.
- Excellent English and Kiswahili speaking and writing skills.
- Experience in working with teams of consultants, advisers and partners.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Flexibility and ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize duties.

The person in this position will be required to interact with diverse staff, engage as a member of a team, anticipates needs and addresses them, give and accept feedback,
troubleshoot questions or problems and generally ensure the logistical success of the Youth Action program events.
This position reports duly to the Youth Action Summit Coordinator and the G-Youth Senior Administrative Officer and is located in Garissa.
Essential functions include [but are not limited to]:
- Provides event planning coordination and support to all logistics aspects of Youth Action activities
- Works collaboratively with the G-Youth Admin/Operations team to procure and rent equipment, services, materials, and supplies needed for the Youth Action Events and reviews/inspects materials for accuracy and quality
- Provides assistance with developing and delivering correspondence related to Youth Action events as needed;
- Creates checklists, work plans and time lines for team members involved in Youth Action events
- Provides assistance with format or presentation material;
- Perform various assigned administrative duties to balance workload of the team and Coordinator
- Plan, organize and independently carry out workload priorities to ensure smooth and timely coordination and production;
- Coordinate production of presentation materials, non-routine publications and brochures;
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with 1-3 years relevant experience;
- Excellent Organization and Event Planning skills;
- Successful experience working in a diverse, face-paced environment;
- Excellent computer skills including PowerPoint and Excel Microsoft Office programs;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, Swahili and Somali.
