Senior Health Officer- Water and Sanitation (software) Job: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

1. SENIOR HEALTH OFFICER WATER AND SANITATION (WATSAN) - SOFTWARE

Reporting to the Health and Care Coordinator, the Senior Health Officer- Water and Sanitation (software) will be part of a team of experts in Public Health, Water and Sanitation and HIV/AIDS. The Health and Care Unit supports 14 National Societies in Eastern Africa in the implementation of various programmes such as the African Red Cross and Red Crescent Health Initiative (ARCHI) strategy for 2010, which focuses on HIV/AIDS, Childhood Illnesses, Sexual and Reproductive Health, First Aid and Emergency Preparedness and Response.

The specific area of focus will be Hygiene Promotion and water borne and water related epidemics.

The key duties for this position among others will be:
  1. To collaborate with team members in the region in determining needs for WatSan support.
  2. Providing guidance and technical support to National Societies in the design and implementation of water and sanitation interventions, ensuring that they address the health needs of communities.
  3. Monitoring and evaluating country level WATSAN projects to encourage project implementers to plan and carry out tasks to improve health and reduce vulnerability of the beneficiaries.
  4. Monitoring water borne epidemics in the region and advocate for successful control measures by National Societies.
  5. Supporting regional initiatives for disaster preparedness and response. As a member of the Regional Disaster Response Team support national societies in assessments, evaluations and drafting of appeals and preparing operational updates as may be required.
Target profile
  • Bachelors degree in public health, health promotion, business administration, public administration, management, social sciences, demography, development planning, statistics or equivalent academic preparation. A postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years experience in the development, design, and implementation of health and care programmes; experience with the Red Cross Movement and in the region would be an added advantage;
  • strong technical competence in research and participatory research methodologies;
  • excellent oral and written skills in English and working knowledge of French.
