Grants Manager - African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), an international conservation organization invites applications for the post of Grants Manager.

The Grants Manager will be responsible primarily for the successful oversight, monitoring and reporting of a grant for AWF work in Kilimanjaro and Samburu Heartlands in Kenya plus cross-site technical activities. S/he will also carry out grant management activities for other grants being implemented in AWF's regional programme, as directed.

This position reports to the Regional Director, Eastern Africa and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the Regional Director in managing overall grant implementation, tracking activities and outputs against the agreed budget and will be responsible for coordination of established Grant Oversight Management Committee (s) and Task Force(s).
  • Work closely with the relevant teams to ensure that the AWF team and systems work effectively to deliver sound Programme management and implementation;
  • Identify any problems as they arise and work with the relevant officers, and if requested with the donor and other officials as appropriate to resolve them in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide overall support to the Regional Director and the Programme team to develop the detailed annual programme implementation plans, budgets and establish the necessary financial tracking processes to ensure full compliance with donor requirements.
  • Provide support to the implementation and management of AWF projects in the region and provide them with technical assistance as needed.
  • Design and implement a system to ensure effective internal and external communication regarding programme implementation, review and assist in the preparation of financial and technical reports, support the Regional Director in his role as AWF focal point for coordination, communication and reporting with the donor.
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting or related field
  • At least 5 years relevant working experience, at least 2 years within a donor funded nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of grant management principles, including U.S. government funding.
  • Experience communicating complex financial information to a non-financial audience.
  • Ability to design complex financial models, proposal budgets, and other financial reports.
  • Ability to organize and present issues in a clear, concise and logical manner.
  • Strong technical skills, including MS Excel, report writer tools, and ability to navigate within accounting systems and other databases.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, exercise good judgment, and quickly identify and resolve problems with minimum supervision.
  • Must be flexible, culturally sensitive, and exude a "team" attitude.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff, partners and donors.
As this position is heavily anchored in AWF's conservation programs, the successful candidate must have a strong interest in and understanding of conservation.
