The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks to recruit a Data Analyst.Promoting the well-being of Africans through policy-relevant research on population and health
The successful candidate will have strong analytical and excellent communication skills. He/She must be self-motivated, flexible with due attention to details and a team player.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Taking responsibility for data cleaning, including doing all required consistency checks for the project(s) he/she is assigned.
- Develop proper documentation and dictionaries for all data sets.
- Extract data and prepare analyzable data sets
- Develop template syntax files for research staff to use in creating various data sets for analyses.
- Support the data analysis needs of researchers.
- Generate from the database regular data quality indicators for monitoring adherence to quality guidelines at both field and data entry levels.
- Generate annual profile indicators (percentages, proportions, rates, etc.) for long-term studies.
- Participate in development of questionnaires and other study instruments.
- Participate in training of fieldworkers and reviewing questionnaires completed in the field.
- Assist in training other staff members on data analysis.
- Write technical reports on the data entry process, including structure of databases in relation to questionnaires.
- Contribute to proposal development, literature review, and scientific writing as required.
- An MSc in Applied Statistics or Bio-Statistics or a quantitative social science discipline (e.g. Demography, Economics).
- Proven skills in managing large datasets (e.g. Demographic and Health Surveys, censuses, etc)
- Advanced programming skills in SPSS, STATA or SAS statistical packages
- Experience of statistical data analysis
- Experience in analyzing longitudinal and relational databases.
- Knowledge of multiple statistical packages
- Knowledge and application of advanced statistical analysis (e.g. Binary and multinomial logistic regression, survival analysis etc)
- Evidence of scientific writing (e.g. for journals)
