Advocacy Officer or Coordinator, AfricaWide Movement for Children

The AfricaWide Movement for Children, formally launched in May 2008, is a pan African initiative aimed at generating collective action at the national and pan-African levels to improve and protect the rights and wellbeing of children in Africa. It is a membership organization that would additionally promoted solidarity and information-sharing among its members. The Movement currently enjoys a membership of over 150 organizations and individuals that operate within Africa. Members include child-focused organizations, children’s organizations/children, networks, institutions and individual child-rights activists. The African Child Policy Forum, an independent Pan-African policy advocacy centre based in Addis Ababa, is the secretariat of the AfricaWide Movement for Children.

We are seeking a dynamic Advocacy Officer/Coordinator to help project the image and visibility of the Movement, widen and invigorate its membership, define and articulate the programmatic content of its work, mobilize resources, and service the Custodians and members of the Movement. This appointment will be initially for one- year with the possibility of extension. The post is located in Addis Ababa.

Tasks and responsibility

Under the overall responsibility of the Deputy Executive Director ofThe African Child Policy Forum, and in close consultation with the President and Custodians of the AfricaWide Movement for Children, he/she will undertake the following tasks:

• Establish the Movement’s secretariat and undertake the relevant tasks;
• Service the President and Custodians of the Movement
• Develop a programme of work for the Movement;
• Prepare briefing and position papers for the Movement;
• Prepare advocacy, information and communication materials;
• Organize meetings of the Custodians and members of the Movement;
• Mobilise partnerships and resources; and
• Undertake any other tasks needed to promote the objectives and work of the AfricaWide Movement for Children.

Qualifications

- University education in the Social Sciences, Law, Journalism or relevant fields
- Excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of French will be an advantage
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proactive and able to work with minimum supervision
- Able to work in a multicultural environment
