KEMRI / CDC Programme Vacancies: NURSE – COUNSELOR

Program description: This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. There is currently a vacancy in the Malaria Mefloquine +CTX Study

the Malaria Branch.

      POSITION: NURSE – COUNSELOR (2 POSITIONS) mr 7 JOB gROUP k

      Location: Siaya and Bondo District Hospitals

      EsSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • EDUCATION: Registered Nursing Officer with a Kenya Registered Nurse certificate or Diploma in community Health Nursing. Additionally, must have training in HIV counseling and testing including DTC or VCT or DCT.
  • EXPERIENCE: Two years of working experience.
  • LANGUAGE: Proficiency in written and verbal English.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills.
  • Must be able to work in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability, and integrity.
  • Clear handwriting.
  • Willing to live in either Siaya or Bondo

DESIRED QUALITIES:

  • Certificate in Counseling
  • Fluency in Ki-Swahili and Dholuo an asset.
  • Experience in counseling of pregnant women in an antenatal clinic and/or women in the labour and delivery ward an asset.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Nurse will report to the Study Coordinator and will work closely with the field staff and laboratory staff. The nurse will recruit participants into the study, guide participants smoothly through study procedures, assist in proper follow-up of participants, and ensure the accuracy of data collected for the study.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Nurse’s responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Inform potential participants about the research study.
  2. Guide participants through the consent process.
  3. Interview participants using a standardized questionnaire.
  4. Conduct counseling and testing of pregnant or recently delivered women in the labour and delivery ward.
  5. Assist in proper follow-up of participants.
  6. Ensure privacy and confidentiality of all participants.
  7. Perform nursing procedures as appropriate to the specific needs of the study and study participants.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: A six (6) 1 year renewable Contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. RENUMERATION: Compensation is negotiable within the relevant pay grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
