The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is an independent and non-profit applied policy research organization with a focus on human security in Africa.
Its mission is to conceptualize, inform and enhance the security debate on the continent.
The Africa Conflict Prevention Programme (ACPP) of the ISS Nairobi Office is seeking to fill the following vacancies in the area of collaborative regional Human security issues in Africa with a view to enhancing national, regional and international conflict prevention activities.
Senior Researcher
The successful applicant will be required to undertake primary and secondary research including conducting interviews with government officials, officials in regional organizations, the security sector, civil society/advocacy organizations, NGOs and academics and work intensely on issues of conflict prevention and regional integration.
The work will entail publishing and disseminating research output, supporting ISS project partners according to the ISS requirements, arranging, facilitating and attending expert workshops in various African countries and beyond

Requirements:
- A Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline such as political science, conflict and peace studies, law, History and military analysis, strategic studies or related qualification.
- A minimum of five years relevant applied research experience in the field of peace and security particularly at the sub-regional or regional levels.
- Competency in English , French and /or other African Union Languages
- A keen understanding of Africa political dynamics and issues related to human security.
- Excellent writing skills, an accepted publication record or proven written work.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake considerable travel.
Researcher
The successful applicant will be required to undertake and support both desk and field research, including conducting interviews with government officials, officials in regional organisations, officials within the security sector, NGOs and academics.
The work will also entail publishing and disseminating research output;facilitating workshops, seminars and conferences and participating in the production of material on early warning and conflict prevention issues.

- Proven interest in the work of the human security sector
- Ability to undertake networking with the academia, research institutes and related sector actors.
- Research, analytical, writing, and computer (MS Office) skills.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
