POSITION OPENINGS COASTAL RURAL SUPPORT PROGRAMME (KENYA)
The Coastal Rural Support Programme (Kenya) is a project of the Aga Khan Foundation. The Programme works in Kinango, Kaloleni and Kilifi Districts. Its goal is to contribute to sustainable and equitable improvement in the livelihood of communities living in the three districts. Project Officer - Developing Energy Enterprises Project (DEEP)
Reporting to the Deputy Programme Director, the Project Officer (DEEP) shall serve as an overall coordinator for an energy enterprises project.
He/She will provide leadership to the energy enterprises team with a view to stimulate emergence and growth of small and micro energy enterprises to address the needs of the rural and peri-urban communities in the coastal area where CRSP(K) works and its surrounding areas.
The person shall ensure the development and implementation of a clear strategy to help realise the objective of the DEEP East Africa project, which is to increase the availability of sustainable, affordable and appropriate energy services to those unserved or underserved in the rural and peri-urban areas in East Africa.
Specifically, this person will be required to:
- Mobilise and create awareness among target communities with regards to development of energy enterprises.
- Carry out awareness campaigns to disseminate information about opportunities available in the DEEP East Africa project to benefit target communities.
- Develop annual work plans to ensure successful implementation and supervise field officers under the DEEP project.
- Manage the budget of the project and ensure timely and accurate reporting to donors.
The ideal person should have strong entrepreneurial and networking skills and experience, be innovative, a team player, and willing to work long hours often in difficult conditions. Marketing experience and specialised expertise in energy-related enterprises in rural and peri-urban areas will be a plus.
He/She should possess the following minimum qualifications:
- Minimum first degree in an area of expertise related to small-scale (micro-level) enterprise development and management (such as economics, business administration, commerce-marketing option, entrepreneurship)
- Minimum of 5 years continuous experience in implementation of micro and small enterprises.
- Demonstrable capability in management of human and other resources
- Proficiency in advanced computer packages.
The Livestock Production Officer will be responsible for community capacity building through extension service delivery that will enable farmers to undertake livestock production more commercially in order to realise economic and livelihood improvements.
Responsible for planning, implementation and monitoring of livestock related interventions, the Officer will be expected to foster appropriate linkages with public and private sector institutions working on livestock production and health issues in order to reduce farmer vulnerability to risks such as livestock diseases and poor husbandry.
Specifically, the Livestock Production Officer will be required to:
- Design and implement a market-development oriented livestock production strategy that will enable the capacity building of farmers to engage in livestock keeping as a business.
- Work in collaboration with the enterprise development unit to facilitate the emergence and growth of business development services around livestock production in the project area.
- Work with the private sector/relevant government departments and institutions to support the training of effective fee-based community based animal health care promoters in varied sub-sectors.
- Facilitate the development of sub-sector based Producer Market Associations (PMAs) and foster effective linkages of these with appropriate service markets, including finance and other input suppliers.
- Support internal monitoring and evaluation of livestock interventions and produce appropriate and timely reports
- The ideal person should have relevant experience gained in an organization working with farmers in arid and semi-arid areas in livestock production, be innovative, a team player, and willing to work long hours often in difficult conditions.
- First degree in animal production backed by at least 3 years experience in agri-business.
- Minimum of 5 years proven experience in working with rural communities in arid and semi-arid areas.
- Computer literate and a strong communicator Valid motorcycle driving license
