Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Resettlement Officer and the overall supervision of the Head of Sub-Office, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Assess and review cases of individual refugees in need of resettlement on emergency, urgent and/or medical grounds. Prepare individual and group submissions for presentations to resettlement countries in line with UNHCR resettlement policy and criteria;

2. Organise and coordinate travel arrangements for refugees accepted for resettlement;

3. Ensure that field offices are kept informed on the status and processing of individual cases;

4. Assist in scheduling and organizing government interview missions to consider submitted refugees;

5. Assist the Office in monitoring resettlement work and liaising with the Branch Office, in particular with regard to the use of quotas and accuracy of statistics;

6. Communication with government authorities, non-government organizations, embassies, and private individuals with regard to information requirements, particular populations or refugee situations, or actions taken on behalf of individual cases;

7. Provide counselling and feedback to refugees on their resettlement cases;

8. Performs other dues as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Skills: Completion of secondary school education at the ‘O’ level. Good communication and computer skills, data handling skills, and knowledge of resettlement issues are an added advantage, including: UNHCR refugee criteria and procedures for refugee status determination, national and international law, international instruments on refugees, UNHCR Resettlement Handbook, UNHCR standard operating procedures for resettlement, and UNHCR office procedures and practices, including the UNHCR code of conduct.

Desirable: Certificate in public or international law.

Experience: Previous job experience of at least five years. Job experience related to the function of at least one year.

Languages: Fluency in English and Kiswahili is essential. Knowledge of Somali would be an asset. Knowledge of other UN language desirable.
