Kenya Red Cross Society Career Opportunities

The Kenya Red Cross Society, which is a leading humanitarian organization, has aligned its organizational structure with its strategic direction aimed at decentralizing decision making authority to its Regional and Branch network where the core business takes place.

The Society seeks to invite suitably qualified candidates to fill the following positions.

Position Title: Head of Health & Social Services
Reporting to: Deputy Secretary General
Job location: Headquarters (Nairobi)

Overall Purpose

Responsible to the Deputy Secretary General for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of an integrated community-based health programme comprising first aid, blood donor, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, public health as well as emergency health care management.

Other responsibilities include implementation of disease prevention and control measures to combat the spread of infectious diseases.

In addition, responsible for creating collaborative partnerships and networks, mobilization of resources as well as lobby and advocacy aimed at improving access and public health emergencies preparedness and response

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate with Branches, Regions, communities and other stakeholders in order to develop a strategic community-based health plan and budget aligned to the Society’s strategic objectives as well as Government health policies and strategies
  2. Develop and implement First-Aid training programmes to equip staff, volunteers and communities with skills that would enable them to respond effectively and efficiently to emergencies occasioned by disasters, emergencies and accidents
  3. Develop and implement strategies that integrate blood donor services within humanitarian relief activities to facilitate the collection of adequate and safe supply of blood for transfusion through recruitment and retention of voluntary unpaid blood donors
  4. Develop and implement a responsive HIV/AIDS programme aimed at combating and reducing the prevalence and impact of HIV/AIDS on vulnerable communities
  5. Develop strategies for integrating social service programme within humanitarian relief activities focusing on children’s homes, homes for the aged, prisons and refugee camps as well as rehabilitation of people affected by disasters
  6. Develop and implement integrated and sustainable community based disease prevention and control programme encompassing reproductive health, public health, nutrition and hygiene promotion to prevent infectious diseases, reduce mortality and improve maternal-child health among vulnerable populations
  7. Develop strategies for strengthening collaborative partnerships and networks with stakeholders, development partners, government agencies, the private sector and other players to ensure organizational effectiveness
  8. Develop and implement resource mobilisation strategies, including coordinating the preparation of funding proposals and appeals for material assistance
  9. Coordinate monitoring and evaluation of donor funded programmes by staff in order to evaluate progress, ensure accountability, determine impact and report on significant achievements to ensure organisational learning
  10. Plan, monitor and evaluate the performance of programme staff against set targets and objectives, assess training needs and implementing development action plans aimed at building the capacity of individuals and multi-disciplinary teams
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed medical doctor (MBCHB) plus a relevant post-graduate such as MSc in Public Health (MPH) or equivalent qualifications
  • Over eight (8) years experience in planning, implementing and evaluating community-based public health programmes in emergency/ relief context
Key Competencies
  1. Broad knowledge of emergency and public health management, humanitarian relief issues, trends and goals at national, regional and international levels aimed at preventing and alleviating human suffering as a result of disasters
  2. Strong leadership, team building, conflict resolution and ability to deliver the Society’s articulated vision for change, create a sense of urgency around change and motivates staff to join change efforts
  3. Strong communication and presentation skills in both English and Kiswahili, including ability to develop reports and prepare relevant publications
  4. Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills including the ability to build collaborative relationships with sensitivity to cultural, ethnic and political issues
  5. Demonstrated competence in resource mobilisation including implementation of effective fundraising strategies to aimed at expanding financial resources
Position Title: Regional Manager
(2 positions : Upper Eastern based in Isiolo and West Kenya Based in Kisumu)

Reporting to: Deputy Secretary General
Job location: Isiolo and Kisumu

Overall Purpose

Responsible to the Deputy Secretary General for effective coordination of regional planning, budgeting, implementation and delivery of high quality integrated humanitarian services and strengthening the capacity of Regional/Branch governance as well as youth and volunteer development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate the development, implementation of the annual Regional plan and budget under the direction of the Regional Committee
  2. Ensure effective resource mobilisation strategies, prepare and submit funding proposals according to donor requirements to supplement local budget allocations.
  3. Design capacity building programmes to effectively prepare communities to respond to disasters, restore family links as well as put in place systems for community reconstruction and environmental conservation
  4. Coordinate implementation of integrated community-based programme that includes public health, social services, water and sanitation, disease prevention and control as well as emergency care management
  5. Coordinate implementation of community mobilisation and capacity building strategies to promote hygiene practices in order to protect health and ensure that communities manage installed water and sanitation infrastructural facilities in a sustainable manner
  6. Develop strategies for strengthening collaborative partnerships and networks with stakeholders, government agencies, the private sector and other players to ensure implementation of programmes that enhance organizational effectiveness
  7. Prepare periodic project status reports and oversee the documentation and reporting of programmes to ensure compliance with stipulated requirements, coordinate timely responses to donor queries as well as inform on constraints on programme delivery
  8. Oversee the dissemination of ideals and Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement, International Humanitarian Law (IHL), International Disaster Response Law (IDRL)
Minimum Qualifications
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in Business Management (MBA) or MSc in Public Health (MPH) or equivalent qualifications with certificate in project management
  • Over five (5) years experience in planning, implementing and evaluating community-based programmes in emergency/relief context
Key Competencies
  1. Broad knowledge of project management disaster management, emergency and public health management, humanitarian relief issues, trends and goals all levels aimed at preventing and alleviating human suffering as a result of disasters
  2. Strong leadership, team building, conflict resolution and ability to deliver the Society’s articulated vision for change, create a sense of urgency around change and motivate staff to join change efforts
  3. Strong communication and presentation skills in both English and Kiswahili, including ability to develop reports and prepare relevant publications
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, data-base, email and utilization of the internet
